speaker size setting for a noob

I have the RTI38's as front speakers right now. I noticed that if I set the speakers to large they sound crisp, clean and absolutley wonderful but if I set them to small they sound muffled and drowned out. Is this normal. I also remember reading somewhere that a large speaker is considered anything witha woofer larger than 5 inches. How true is that?

The Large vs Small setting relates to the frequency response of the speaker, not the actual size. Setting the receiver to "Small" will send the lower frequencies to the sub (Assuming you have one connected.) Everything else goes to the speaker. Setting the receiver tolarge ( for a full range speaker) will send all frequencies to the speaker.

That makes sense except that it actually sounds like it is attenuating the speaker sound. Everything including the highs and mids sound muddled. Well i am changing my reciever to a hk avr525. Ill see if it still does it with that one.

Do you have an HK reciever right now? I own an HK, and I can say I noticed a much bigger difference between large and small than with other receivers. I found it sounds best with the front two speakers set to Large, the others set to Small, and the Sub set to LFE + LR. So That's my reccommendation. Good luck.
