Doing the "MOD"

As many have put it on here....I will be on my way to the "audio nirvana" state of mind next week!!

The rings, caps, and resistors will be arriving next week for the 2.3TLs. The 198s are gonna have to wait for a few more weeks. Also have the dynamat extreme ready to go.

I understand there will be a burn in time but I'm stoked. I really anxious to hear the drastic difference of the before and after and hopefully my ears aren't too far gone to distinguish the difference.

Im with you! Can't wait for my packages to arrive as well. I will be joing you in "the mod". As far as the burn in, I plan to take it easy and let them move in gradually. It will be real fun I totally agree with you. :D

Hi Brock, I'll attach some drawings I made which may make the mods a little easier for you, in terms of keeping track of what goes where.

I already removed the polyswitches and replaced them with 1/2 ohm 12W resistors before I sold the speakers to you (so you'll have a couple spares I guess). I also checked out all the wiring, which can be fairly time consuming so you don't need to do that. The second document shows all the measured values for your speakers (by serial number) and I also checked the ESR on all the caps (not shown in the doc) and all were OK.

You're going to love it when the mod is finished. I ran my 2.3TL's 18 hrs a day for two weeks for burn in. You will notice a difference as soon as you turn them on.

On the one hand I'd hate to set his expectations too high, but on the other hand it's pretty rare that people don't hear an improvement when they do a crossover upgrade.

The 3 main things that can change (hopefully for the better) the sound when you do a crossover upgrade:

1) the switch from NP electrolytic caps to film caps

2) the change in measured/actual values from old caps to new, and/or the difference between the left and right speaker measured values.

3) replacing caps that were beginning to become defective (e.g. high ESR) with fully functional new caps, even if the replacements were of the same type and were exactly the same measured values.


#3 doesn't apply in this case because I measured all the values and ESR's before I sold the speakers and they were all OK.

#2 could be more significant than #1 (though #1 would still have an effect) if there's a large difference between the actual values of old and new. That's whay I provided the actual measured values. So for example the measured value of C4 in the left speaker is 17% higher than the nominal schematic value. Since Brock probably ordered values as close as possible to the schematic values, he could very possibly hear a change even if he only replaced C4. I assume Brock probably got 1% tolerance caps, so he can probably trust the value stamped on the case even if he has no way to measure it.

Other possible things (not counting cabinet mods) that could have an effect on sound when doing a crossover upgrade:
--Polyswitches going bad and being replaced by a fixed resistor (already done so doesn't apply in Brock's case, but this alone could have an effect that can be heard).
--Old resistors measure out of tolerance or have high inductance
--Connector contacts oxidized, or loose
--Flakey wiring or wrong internal wiring (e.g. plus and minus swapped)

Probably some others I'm not thinking of at the moment...

If you want biggest bang for the buck, hold off until you can do the tweeters at the same time. I guess it all depends how many stages of tinkering and burn in you want to go through (not to mention financial considerations regardless of that), and some people enjoy the tinkering part more than others.

I've been busy but I just wanted to give a shout out to George and Jerry for their help modding the crossovers. When I can find the charger to the camera, I will post their beautiful craftmanship.

I do believe I'm in the "growing pains" phase!! Only about a week to go.
