Updated the Driftwood

Took a few pics last night of the on-going construction refurb project. Most is done less a lot of detail work; molding, blackout the A/C unit, painting...etc. But the pics give you a general layout of the room after the change over to front projection.

Future plans are to buy a new couch and two recliners and get rid of the theater seats altogether.

Looks good Ron, I still think this is a pretty cool theater idea, how did you get the idea of using one stall of your garage? Is it a Ron-P special or are there others out there doing it?

I am particularly interested in details on how you made your projection screen...I have a projector and would love to know what you used to make the screen, and how big it is?

I had the theater in the garage idea for a couple years. Before I put it in the spare room (aka The GreenRoom), I wanted to put it in the garage but talked myself out of doing it. I know there are others out there that do it as well, but they are few and far between.

I just read through a copy of OC Weekly (local magazine) and they had a section on HT's. They interviewed a guy who did exactly what I did. Took over a section of his garage and built a mini HT that seats 7.

As for the screen. I used pine 1x4's and blackout cloth for the local fabric shop. Built the frame and then streached the fabric over it, stapling it on the back side. I then painted the screen with a custom mix gray from Lowe's. The screen is 72" x 41". Total cost was less than $40.

Looks really good Ron......just a few questions.....

For the theater seats to the L and R of the projector......do those seats get any constant hum of the cooling fan hitting their ears while that thing's on? If the cabinet that's it's in is blocking the noise, does it somehow breathe enough not to get too hot?

You said that you painted the screen. I don't think that I've ever heard of that being done. Sonically, does the paint play any havoc on the sounds trying to come through the fabric? I guess it all depends on what kinda paint we're talkin about.........just not familiar with that part of the process........

Lookin' good Ron! A suggestion for ya...cuz I know you're an open minded sorta guy...see if you can find a Salamander dealer and check out the the TC-1 seats (The same as mine of course!) They are not as wide as most of the HT specialty seats on the market, and they might be just the thing to replace those theater seats you plan on removing.

Brett, the PJ makes no noticalbe noise at all, even during low level audio scenes. It has a very quiet fan. The screen is mounted to the wall with the speakers to the sides so no sound needs to travel through the fabric. The gray paint color really helps black levels without affecting other colors.

As for the seats Frank, thanks for heads-up. The two theater seats will be the first to go, then I'll replace the couch.

It's Lowe's Valspar Gray Plank Interior Flat (code: 101-21.5, 107-1, 116-1).

Some have stated they need the actual SKU# off the can for the specific base paint. When I get home, I'll post that here as well.

boy that looks good. i would love to get a bigger tv.but my fronts are allready prety close now. how do you like your adcom amps over the internal of your recever. i love my new adcom but everytime i shutdown the amp with a switched outlet i get a thump. i think i might have a 12 v on my recever.

Thanks gonzo, I love the Adcoms, quite a sizeable increase in sound quality over the Marantz. Great little amps for my little room. Someday I'll up and buy a pre/pro just too many other items on the upgrade road to hit first. I get the same thump when the amps shut down.

Sorry about the site shut down. With all the Front Projector talk on other forums my site has been flooded and earthlink got pissed. It'll be back up tomorrow. I do have some pics up in the system showcase.
