Default Interesting day; new job or more pay?

Well this has been one heck of a day, and a little taxing.

Had a second interview with a property developer/manager in town today and things went extremely well. Sounds like it's down to myself and 1 other candidate. Problem is, the other guy already works for the company in question, so he has that going for him. I'm friends with the controller there though, so I've got that in my court at least.

Hah, since we've lost 2 valuable people in my group at my current job in the last month, I also took that as an opportunity to ask for a rather significant (to me at least) pay increase. I don't know what my director thinks, but I'm hoping to get 1/2 to 2/3rds of what I asked for for my increase.

Stressful day! Now if I get an offer on the new job, things get more difficult/ interesting. Stay where I'm at and enjoy my security/ comfort with my role, or go work for a new company and get some different experience in the world of commercial real estate??

Tough decision, and hopefully one I'll have to make in a couple of weeks...I think I know the answer to my internal debate (taking the new job sounds most appealing to me), but the thought makes me a little nervous.....getting comfortable where you work is both a blessing and a curse apparently.

Anyone else battled a decision like that recently? What made you decide to stay or go?

the only time you should approach your existing manager asking for more money based on another job opportunity is:

    1) whey you have a definite job offer from the 2nd employer
    2) if you're prepared to walk away if they don't give you what you're asking for

If you do it wrong, your existing manager might look at you as potential flight risk anytime more money comes around and decide that you're not worth hanging onto......

I had to deal with this issue once.. Offered another job with similar duties for material difference in pay. With firm offer in place, I sat down with my current employer (since i didn't want to leave) and discussed what i enjoyed working where I was and how I wanted to continue to contribute where I was, but needed the pay differential addressed.

My current pay was increased to better represent the market for my position and I stayed happily employed...

Always felt it was best to convey your argument for more pay in why it benefits your current company (your expertise, unique skillset, overall market value of your services, etc)

But I'd work where I was most happy.. even 10-15% pay difference won't mean much if you hate work all day, every day

Agreed.....but it's not like he's changing careers here......it's a different Commercial Real Estate company so he knows what he's getting into basically.

If the response to asking for more money is a no, and the other job doesnt' materialize, hopefully he's happen enough to stay put and the boss doesn't paint a target on his back because he's looking to jump for more money..........

Yea, I'm not in a bad position now; this is just a different angle. On 1 hand id like to learn something new, and on the other I like knowing what I'm doing now. Money definitely isn't everything...

The worst thing you can ever do is stick to one position because you're "comfortable."

If you feel like the other job would give you more experience, plus it's more money, and you think you'd enjoy it, then i say go for it.
