Default Ethernet port on a new display, necessary?

How important/useful is it to have an ethernet port on a new TV?

Trying to wade through the options on TVs, don't have a network set up in the house currently, but would like to buy a display that can be used in one in the future if needed. Seems the TVs with ethernet ports are at an appreciably higher price point then similar models without.

Depends on what services the TV supports that you might use. Netflix might be one. I now use powerline devices where I need internet access.
Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)
Preamp: Joule Electra LA-150 MKII SE
Amp: Wright WPA 50-50 EAT KT88s
    Analog: Marantz TT-15S1 MBS Glider SL| Wright WPP100C Amperex BB 6er5 and 7316 & WPM-100 SUT
    Digital: Mac mini 2.3GHz dual-core i5 8g RAM 1.5 TB HDD Music Server Amarra (memory play) - USB - W4S DAC 2
Cables: Mits S3 IC and Spk cables| PS Audio PCs

Right now I don't have any interest in using the TV to access the internet without a computer. I've been using J River Media Center for my music lately, and was browing it's other functions and the networking abilities caught my eye. Having a server to distribute my music and movies throughout the house sounds pretty cool to me.

Yeah - you need to know what formats the TV will play (music, movies, what profile of h264, etc.) & what formats your server software supports.

At the very least, internet connected TVs' firmware tends to be updated via the network. Whether those updates are for the apps or TV functionality is another question.

I'm waiting for the day when all the control functions of a TV/PJ/Pre-Pro/AVR/AMP/Sources are all Ethernet addressable and I can use my iPhone to control it all.

So far only my receiver has this function.
