Default May be getting a new dog...

My wife is a veterinarian. I got a text today. It read:

"May have found a dog for us."

    This should be interesting...

Learning a little at a time until I get home tonight to talk some more; it is a labrador weimaraner mix.

I need to meet the dog, she said I will love it right away. I have no doubt about that, just got to see how it reacts to our two cats...

I'd be more worried about how the cats reacted to the dog. Here's a hint (not good).

Those are both good breeds of dogs. Labs are definitely more laid back then the Weimaraner. They both need a good deal of exercise to stay happy. Especially the Weimaraner. They are bred to work long days in the field running 8-10 miles.

This is an interesting mix. Never seen a Weimador or a Labaraner. If you are lucky, it will both point pheasants and retreive ducks!

The cat and dog thing can be overcome but takes work. Hardest with older cats!

Are Weimaraners good with cats? Some yes, some no. They are a sporting breed, bred to hunt anything with "fur or feathers" and most have a strong " prey drive". A very high percentage of Weimaraners will kill cats if given the opportunity. If you own cats and want to own a Weimaraner, you will have to teach the Weimaraner that the cat is not prey or their toy, and teach the cat to not tease and annoy the Weimaraner. You should be prepared to have to keep them separated for the entire life of the pets, there is a chance they will never accept each other.

Personally I can never have enough dogs in my life. They IMHO are the best example this side of heaven of total and unwavering love and devotion.

My apartment complex only allows us to have 2 dogs or else we would totally have a pack. My wife have already discussed when we buy a house and have the back yard fenced in perhaps becoming involved with some local rescue's and fostering dogs.

My dogs have ended more fights between me and my wife than I can count. Its hard to argue and yell when they look up at you with this "Daddy, stop yelling at mommy and give me a hug face". They have comforted me when I am sick or just not in a good mood.

If you do end up with another dog I am sure it will be a blessing to your family and if not perhaps you can help find it a better home and save it from being another dog on the street or worse on death row in a shelter.

OK, I met the dog last night. Definitely looks more lab than Weimaraner, but still has that "silverish" color a little bit.

Very friendly, very gentle. A little excitable, my wife thinks he is about 2 years old. It was a stray someone brought in and no one has claimed him, it's been well past the standard time they hold the dogs.

The doctor who owns the clinic said he would have kept the dog as a clinic mascot if no one took him in. But I told my wife we can take him if she wants, so we'll make sure no one else has claimed him and I think we'll take him home soon.

As mentioned, my wife is a vet so she sees these dogs come in all the time. I knew it was only a matter of time before she would tell me she found one for us. We just bought our house in January and have been doing a lot of work in/on it. We've just about finished so things have calmed down enough now I think we're ready to bring a dog in.
We have a big back yard, plus a soccer field behind us as well, so the dog will get his exercise.

Here's hoping all goes well and we get the dog. I'll update with pictures if we do.

OK, we got the dog today. So far so good, very well mannered. One of our cats met him today and they both were great with each other, so that is good.

Still not sure on the breed, more lab than weimaraner, but still has a somewhat silver color to him.

Here are a couple of picts. We have not decided on a name yet, but we are leaning towards Argento. That means Silver in Italian.

    Wish us luck!

    Congrats!

Getting another dog myself. Taking my pitbull to the shelter to do a 'doggy-intro' to meet the dog I'll be adopting possibly. So far the dog is very well mannered and very smart, just hope she gets along with Jacquee (sweetest pitbull you'll ever meet)!

We did a little more research this weekend and determined the dog is a silver lab. Not very common from what I understand, but helps validate his new name, Argento (Italian for Silver).

Anyway, he did very good this weekend and we are going to keep him. We'll be getting a microchip in him today and the obligatory dog license from the town.
