Default Where do you purchase your Blu-ray Discs?

Most of you know that I have recently gotten a Blu-ray player hooked up to the rig and I'm diggin' the [you know what] out of them. I was just curious, for those that have already been around the block with Blu-ray movies....is there a site or spot that you get some good discounts on them? If so, have you noticed any quality differences?

I have no idea as I just buy what tickles my fancy and if the price sounds good enough, I just get it. That said, there may be a spot or site that folks go to first to check out a good deal on Blu-ray stuff.

If you guys and gals would be so kind as to point those that dig Blu-ray in the right direction, it would be most appreciated. If it's just like purchasing any other CD/SACD than forgive me as I'm a complete rookie when it comes to Blu-ray but I figured that it wouldn't hurt to ask.

I purchase most of mine from Amazon as they have good prices and often have great deals on boxed sets. I do sometimes get new releases from Best Buy as they are usually on sale the week of their release.

You can get some great prices in the used market. I've got many off Craigslist at 1/4 of the regular price.

Amazon or the local fry's electronic for me. Just like DVD's, the release dates are usually on Tue. Some of the box office bombs will drop to $10-$15 in about 6+ months if you're willing to wait.

For older movies, the transfers are sometimes questionable so I always check with High Def Digest. Sometimes an $8 transfer isn't worth $8. The site is also good for upcoming release dates.

Yeah, I've already noticed that. Ferris Beauller's Day Off wasn't worth the $8 IMO. Thank you for the link!

I had no idea that Best Buy sometimes had new movies on sale the week of their release. I wouldn't have thought that in a million years, nor would I have thought folks were already selling them on Craigslist already. Now I'm glad I asked the question. Thank you.

Go to www.blu-ray.com and sign up for a free account. There, you can look at Amazon's price history on any title and (most importantly) enter the amount you want to pay for that title. When any title in your list hits your price threshold, blu-ray.com will send you an e-mail notifying you that Amazon's price is that low. It's a great way to snipe deals on cheap Blu-rays.

Their site also lets you enter your collection and flag which movies you have and haven't watched yet, which is very nice. They also have very helpful reviews on most titles in advance of release so you don't screw up and buy a dud, and they are pretty good about updating their site with new release dates. Definitely a must-bookmark site for Blu-ray owners. That site made my Black Friday week buying very easy, and I didn't miss a single deal that I was looking for because of the e-mail notification. I did, however, spend a ridiculous amount of money on movies that week.

What Kunta said Tom. blu-ray is a great site. I am able to track my library there, as well as receive alerts when a disc hits a price range I've inputted for it. (Picked up Terminator Salvation for $10.49 thanks to my alerts there.)

Usually Amazon, or occasionally Best Buy. I picked up The Pacific box set BD at BB for $48, so BB does still have a few deals on BD.

I just snagged The Pacific on BD for $39 thanks to Blu-ray.com's price tracking. Anyone looking, Amazon just dropped the price on all the HBO box sets (Rome, The Pacific, Band Of Brothers, John Adams, etc.).

This was in response to BB HBO price drops. If you can wait to get it in the mail, it's really hard to beat Amazon prices. And they usually match BB's deals when they release them. In the case of the HBO deals, I think they even undercut them by a buck.

I like Amazon's free shipping at any price, and no tax.

The thing I realized years ago with Amazon is shipping is a scam. I used to go with 2 day shipping, but I soon realized that did not mean I would get it 2-3 days after ordering it. It took them a week to ship whatever was ordered, and then the 2 day shipping took effect. And I thought, why am I paying for 2 day shipping when I get it 7-9 days later? So, I go with the free shipping, and get it just as fast.

When buying blu-rays it's usually easy to get over $25 for the free shipping. And then it's just a matter of how close you are to whatever storage facility they're shipping from. Cross country takes a week. But if you get a local facility, then it may only take one or two days. And around Christmas, processing can be only one or two days. Very little wait in December.
