    Default Pop and No Kick

Some of you military people might remember (or know of) that phrase.

Anyhow, I was changing the inputs on my Adcom GFA-555, going from computer to tiny am radio (3.5mm plug to RCAs), and I hear a POP.

No sound from left side speakers LSi F/X.

    Quick diagnoses:
Both LSi speakers are alive and well.
    GFA-555 left channel dead.

I'm relieved it was just the amp, but I don't know the first thing about repairing this thing, so I'm hoping that if I crack the case I might be able to find a blown fuse or something.

    Any thoughts?

Monster Jam: The Adcom GFA-555 has 4 simple glass cylindrical fuses inside the case. Take of the top (lots of screws). The fuses are in pairs on vertical circuit boards at the rear of the amplifier. Very visible from the top. Easily replaced. good luck!

I dived into the guts for a closer inspection after a simple replacement didn't work (blew the new fuses too) and it appears that above one of the capacitors, there is a smaller circuit board with a resistor (or something like that) that appears to be smoked up from the bottom (the side facing the cap).

Since I draw the line at soldering, I am going to have to take it in for repairs, or throw it in the trash. The fate of this amp will be based on the repair estimate.

Over $100 and I'll be calling Emotiva.

Sorry to hear about this MJ, hopefully it will be a simple and inexpensive fix on the 555. I've heard Emotiva called many things, lol, let us know what you decide on:)

Yeah - I'm not really looking for a critical listening amp. This Adcom was really just a toe dip in the water, and while it worked, it sounded great. But I'd be willing to settle for less quality for less money; I just need to drive LSi F/X without damaging my true love: the F/X.

    I'll post the follow-up. Hopefully its a feel-good ending.

    ...and the follow up.

The local electronics repair store is doing great business. In general, good news for them. For me, it means a pretty long wait until the amp is repaired: 3-4 weeks!

Their initial estimate is a flat repair rate of $150*, slightly above my threshold, but I am going to suck it up and get it fixed.

*Caveat: That is unless the amp is really jacked up, which likely will not be my case. If the cost runs higher than the estimate, they will call to notify, in which case I will reject repairs and turn it into an Adcom GFA-555 monoblock.
