    Default Brand new psw505

    Sony STR-DE598 settings Question

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My brand new psw505 is arriving tomorrow.
I am trying to adjust my receiver to the best of my ability
I have very limited knowledge on sound settings
From what I have read, all 5 speakers should be set to small
The sub should be set to off
I am connecting the new sub with the speaker cables in and out to the front speakers.

    THIS IS MY QUESTION:

when i SET THE SUB TO "OFF" ON THE RECIEVER, THE FRONT SPEAKERS ARE AUTOMATICALY SET TO LARGE.

There seams to be no way to change them to small.

All the other speakers are on small, but the fronts wont change with the sub "off" option.

    What should I do?

Correct me if I`m wrong, but if using the speaker wire in and out from the front speakers to hook up the sub, should not the front speakers be set to small?

You cannot set them to small with sub turned to off. That's normal.

If you're hooking up the sub with the high level crossover in the sub, you want it set to large anyways, otherwise it won't send the bass frequencies to the speakers, and there will be no way for the sub crossover to get those signals.

This is normal, you should do nothing but hook it up and enjoy.

Why aren't you hooking it up with the sub output? It'll sound much better that way.

    Default sub output

Thank you so much for that answer.

I used the polk preferred method. The wires were run long ago. Everything runs down a hole in the floor, into the basement, and then back up to the sub, which is on the other side of the room.

I suppose I could run an rca cable the same way but for now I plan to use my current setup.

If I ever get the patience to run a sub out cable in the future I will try it.

Do you really think it would make that much of a difference?

I do however have another question

Why does the receiver have video inputs. Its an audio receiver. What is the video for.

You may use it as a video switcher if you wanted or needed to do so. I'm pretty sure that model doesn't upconvert so you probably don't need to worry about it. It's a standard feature on all AVR's that I've seen.

I'd run a sub cable and yank all that wire and make some small jumpers for your other speakers but its your wire clutter not mine.
