    Default MMC6500's woofer cutting out

    Mmc6500 bi amped by pa500.4

About 2 months ago my right woofer started cutting in and out which led me to believe one of the connectors or wires was lose. Took door panel apart, everything seem ok, installed it back - works like it should, hooray.

Today it started cutting out again for just a few seconds then went out. Upon messing around on the headunits balance/fader I realized that its not completly shot, it cuts in and out but for some reason when it works it only plays upper midrange, no midbass at all.

    Blown woofer?

sounds like a blown woofer to me if the connection is still solid.

I never had a blown speaker before - is it normal for it to still play some frequencies and not others? I thought when speaker is blown it doesn't play at all, not only particular range (lower midrange/midbass in my case)

Not sure about connection but i sure will take my door panel off again just to make sure all connectors are solid.

Have you checked the wires from the amp? Perhaps one of the wires got pinched somewhere. Troubleshoot the amp/HU by swapping speaker wire/RCA's and see if it has something to do with those.

Not typical but it does happen. Its caused by a break in the tinsel lead or voice coil typically. If it plays a note that extends the cone out further, it can 'reconnect' that broken lead.

Same can happen by simply pushing the cone in.

Yeah, gonna mess around with troubleshooting. Main problem is that it's freazing cold out and i don't have a garage to work in....

    Thanks guys!

    Makes sense.

On the way to work yesterday woofer just decided to act normal again lol. Played fine for a day and this morning again on the way to work (when i turned the volume up) said "enought" lol and stopped playing low frequencies.

This is gonna be some serious troubleshooting lol.

Yeah, gonna start troubleshooting. Main issue is that since it somehow fixes itself i'll need to wait at aleast a week or two after EACH little step - switch wires, rcas, amp's pre-outs...... then there's also a line driver in the mix, x-overs..... i should know for sure by 2012 what the issue is LOL

Checking the wires should be easy. Just wiggle them at each connection, speaker and amp. If its a bad hook up it should start cutting out immediately. If not, you know youre wiring is solid and you can move on to your speakers.

Good to hear. Maybe the window pulls on the wires when you roll it down? I had that issue in my car the first time I installed the woofers. Not sure how they were getting ahold of the wires even now, but they did.

Nah. Chattanooga sits on the TN/GA border and Ringgold is a tiny suburb only a few miles outside the city limits. Nobody has ever heard of Ringgold cause its so small so its just easier explaining where I live by just saying Chattanooga.

I have a blown woofer on one of my 4 momo's. Can you buy just one woofer individually?
