    Default hifi vhs sound

Anybody remember the tech show on the old tech tv channel with leo laporte and patrick somebody, before they changed to g4 tv.

It was mostly computer and gadget oriented, but sometimes they would touch on av, well one night, patrick said hifi vhs was a superior audio source, of course, the video not so much.

Has anyobody ever hooked up a hifi deck, and if so how was the sound compared to cd etc.

I have what was, in the day a fine sharp hifi deck and several concert tapes, if the sound rocked, i would hook er up.

    Any info would be appreciated.

With older CD's and not the rig I have now, the sound was about the same if not better in certain aspects. I liked the HI-FI VCR I had much better than any tape deck I ever owned or listened to. It is a Mitsubishi and I'll be damned if I remember the model number.

Best advice? Hook it up and let your ears decide. They never lie.

A lot of guys still do music on VHS Hi Fi, it's got a lot more bandwith available than cassette, and it can sound really, really good done properly. It's not practicle, but if you want to roll through a few hours of set selections, it's tough to beat. Clunky and dated, but a poor mans reel 2 reel. Tom, Mitsu had really high marks for SQ, I was a Panasonic man myself, I found the 4 head, hi-fi decks tough to beat.

There are a few threads around here, if you can find them.

I had a HiFi JVC top of the line VHS deck in the late 80's. It performed on paper better than a CD. I had some well recorded VHS tapes that sound pretty sweet. Better than the CD's I was listening to. The main problem is you can't find worthy tapes now, and tapes deteriorate with age. You can do it for fun, but I wouldn't invest any time, money, or effort in it.

The show was called "The Site" if memory serves.

I ran my H/K VCD2000 HiFi vcr as a reel to reel deck for party music. It worked quite nicely and sounded good, though with carousel cdp's coming to market just a year later it didn't end up making sense.

naw im not gonna buy or record much, i was just trying to decide if i wanted to brave the pile of junk at my moms to dig out the old sharp.

By the way i used to play this over the old akai quad amp that i have a picture of in one of my posts here, it was truly a beast, in every way.

Threw it out because the knobs, when turned, would scratch and cut out for a second, didnt know about deoxit, never even cracked the case open.

    THREW IT AWAY
