I never heard of it before. I like his movies a lot, but I never pictured him as far as "Oscar" quality in the acting department. Did you see it or a preview of it?

Visit any Asian market for the movie. I would go for the genuine dvd than a pirated one because it's that good (imo) ! Plus it's better naturally with the original mandarin track with english subtitles.

It was already released in Asia and because it's a foreign movie it takes time to be considered for the Western world. It is coming October 31st of this year. Just in time for Oscar nominations ! :D

I'd doubt Jet Li would be nominated for an Oscar but he did well in the movie. I was more less considering the movie for Best picture , screenplay , soundtrack etc. .

So is it going to be released as a foreign film with subtitles or are they releasing an english version? I'm a pretty big Jet Li fan. That lil bastard can MOVE!!!!!!!

own it, saw it, its ok. a little too artsy. I think it tries too hard to present itself as something more than a martial arts film in the line of crouching tiger. so lots of rainwater, trees blowing, silence and face shots. but there were some cool scenes and action sequences, although some of them look a little to CGI'ish for me. so for me it was ok.

You may say artsy but I thought it was a beautiful film! I'll admit that when I first seen the movie - it was only snipets of it here and there and thought it was just eye candy. When I finally had a chance to see it from beginning to end , the scenery , color, symbolism only made the story telling that much more complete.

I don't want to give the movie away but you're right that it is more than an martial arts film and more so than CTHD. In the end it'll really have you think and say who or what is a HERO?

Too CGI'ish ? Hardly. I think they knew when to draw the line and not make a fool of themselves. Afterall, this is a movie of ancient and mythical martial arts where people can defy gravity. How do you think they can do this without CGI, wires, etc. ? It was done just enough.

Of course you're entiltled to your opinion. No movie is perfect for everyone's taste. Though if you're a fan of CTHD and tired of all those sequels, superhero movies, etc. it's defintely worth the buy or seeing in theatres this fall !

I'm waiting for the extended version to come out. I have the Region 3 DTS-ES (matrix) release. It's a good movie. I don't try to compare the newer high budget chinese films to crouching tiger. Each has their own style, story. I wish Miramaxe would stop butting in and forcing em to shorten movies down.

There's many asian dvd retailers that sell it.
The US shops charge more like hkflix.com, pokerindustries.com . My fav HK retailer is dddhouse.com & layoyo.com
Just make sure you buy the right one :)

    Default Oscar Material !

    WoW !

I borrowed this movie from a friend and I have to agree, this is Oscar material !

This movie is beautiful and I agree from one critic's review- "the makings of a master piece !"

Do not pass up the oportunity to see this movie !!

Hopefully Miramax is able to market this movie well but it'll be up against a lot of other kung fu movies (kill bill, matrix 3) this fall and audiences maybe kung fu-ed out !

Yes, there's gonna be a lot of movies to get hyped up for this holiday season. Another notable mention is "the Last Samurai" with Tom Cruise. It should do well.

As with "Hero", whether Miramax bungles its promotion or not- I'm betting audiences will pass the word around and movie critics will help endorse it !

    This movie is epical !!!!!!!

I received the movie via USPS in the mail yesterday. I bought the all regions code DVD so it works fine in my DVD player. I scan through several scenes to make sure it work. Beautiful color, video transfer, the DTS 5.1 is great. Since there is no english dubbed, you will have to watch it in the original chinese language with english subtitle. You will probably have hardtime try to figure out how use the set up screen to set the soundtrack and the english subtitle because there is 100% chinese language on the menu set up screen.

I do recommend fivestarlaser.com, quick service, I ordered it on 7/31, I got it yesterday, 8/4, that's superfast( these are 100 original DVD movies, no bootleg). There are a number of good chinese movies in this site by Shaw Brothers, but they all encoded to region 3, I 'm going to order a regional free DVD player in order to watch any of these movies. They charge $5 for shipping regardless how many DVD you order, plus if you order 5 DVDs, the sixtth one is free.

this is the all region code version with DTD 5.1

this is the region 3 version, will not play on american DVD player:

Depends on your brand of american player.
My philips was a quick hack to become region free :)

The only downside to fivestar laser is their anime, avoid those, those are boots.

I finished watching the movie, definitely, I agree, it has oscar material written all over. Great photography shots and directions, beautiful color, the DTS 5.1 is awsome, probably one of the best. At the end, I think every main characters in the movie are heroes, including the King. I have some hardtimes try to keep up with the subtitle. I hope they will release the new version with english dubbed track.

Within the content of this movie, I think he is, or at least he understood "the law of the street". Hey that's kinda tough, but they will get over it...

Just got my copy...and must agree with Peter. DTS soundtrack is excellent. If anyone is interested, guy in Ebay (AV-Express) sells it and the process was flawless. Great communication. Took about a week and 1/2 from Shanghai.

Company Miramax or should I say Miram-"axe" has been rumoured to push the North American release of Hero to 2004 !

This is a movie that should've already been released in winter of 2002 but executives were greedy and wanted their movie "Chicago" to get all the glory. Nothing against "Chicago" but now is the time for a HERO !!!

.....I got mine from Ebay about a year ago from Hong Kong I believe. They're releasing it in US theaters sometime this year I believe. They postponed the release here because they didn't want to compete with some other movie. The DTS track is pretty sweet. It took me an extra minute or two to understand the menu.

E-bay seems to be the more popular choice to get this dvd. However you may need an all-region dvd player. Also this movie (hopefully) gets its big screen debut for N.America August 20.

Ron, you'll enjoy this movie as will others. Personally it may be the best "all-around" martial arts movie made to date.

Only one movie may top HERO and that's the House of Flying Daggers by the same director Zhang Yimou . This movie blew everyone away at Cannes just a few days ago and Tarantino basically gave him a "we're not worthy" salute !

Funny, I was just taking a few snap shots of the hometheater. Take a look at the thread- it'll have a few shots of HERO.

When i went to watch Helsing, i saw a movie with Jet Lee that Tarantino directed - I guessing this is it.
PS3 and HD Front Projection, life is good. Too bad Blu-Ray and the PS3 are already obsolete.....
