It works, it will only stop the messenger pop ups (Skinny guy to fat guy, rich guy to poor guy, stop these ads) That stuff, it will NOT stop the ads you get on websites.

HBomb... you might also want to check out a program called 'Ad-Aware'. I work in IT, and recently found a lot of systems have programs running on their own hard drives spitting out constant pop-ups. One was tied in to Internet Explorer so bad I almost had to rebuild Windows (due to IE/ Windows being so intertwined now), but Ad-Aware cleaned it up. I've used it frequently and it's worked great (and free!).

    Ad-Aware

Once it's done scanning your system, it will give you a list of all the offenders it finds. If you end up using it, I'd also recommend to go to the globe icon (web update), and make sure you get the latest pattern update.

Did I mention I'm over 21? I can take that beer now! ;)

Dylan i have tried Ad-Aware and it has helped but has not eliminated the problem just reduced it slightly. Do you have a link to globe icon? I have no clue what that is.

Doro, I'm going to try that also.

These Pop Ups should be illegal! That is a real inrusion into my privacy in which I have not sanctioned. I can deal with pop ups if I hit a web site because thats how they make money I guess but I have never given any of them permission to just send me stuff.

I left my computer on over night just to see how many I got and I stopped counting at 100 and that was after ad-aware.

I'm going to leave work, buy a 12 pack and go to war with these bastards!

    Thanks for your help

The Twin will be available for comment later:D

Dude do what I said - it will eliminate them pop ups. They are eternal, not a pop up. They are a trogan - they are literally embedded in your computer. Pop ups stoppers will NOT stop them. I downloaded Norton Security, one of the finest Hacker/Virus/Pop Up stoppers available. It couldnt stop them. The only thing that has worked for me is the thing above that I said to do. Jeeeeeeeeez, listen to a kid for a change.....lol

Sorry, that was vague. Once you have Ad-Aware open, the globe icon will be towards the top right. This way it knows about the latest tricks.

I think we're all talking about 3 separate issues here: 1) pop-ups the web sites generate (Pop-Up Killer), 2) the ones that reside locally that are data miners, pop up creators, site trackers, etc. (Ad-Aware), and 3) Windows Messenger "pop-ups" that can be disabled by Vr3's steps (or Control Panel--> Add/ Remove Programs/ Windows Components/ Windows Messenger).

Not quite even the 1/2 Twin yet but Sids fix is in and no pop ups for at least 1/2 hour yet.

If I don't have any for another 1/2 hour this will be a real record. I hope I can report back a way ta go Sid message but things are looking great so far.

I found this to be an excellent source of tested Windows XP tweaks and fixes.

They have alot of auto-runs and auto-registry tweaks. :)

I did this when I got my new computer a couple of weeks ago. If it doesn't work for you you may need to download sp pack 1 (I think it was) from the MS site and then follow MX's directions. It sure was a pain in the ass for a couple of days until I realized the popups were due to a function XP allowed.

Or you could just get a router/firewall.

YOU SHOULD HAVE ONE ANYWAY. Sheesh.

Anyway, mx is right. What he's talking about has absolutely nothing to do with browser pop-ups. Good advice either way.

You can also right-click on my computer and then click on "manage", if the option is available... That will get you to where the services are hidden.

I also have a little program that completely removes Windows Messenger from your system without you having to do anything. It's much easier that having to dig through all the menus and such... if anyone wants it I'll post the URL. I disabled messenger just because I got tired of it in the system tray (I wasn't receiving anything through it because I'm firewalled). Stupid Microsoft....

Those messages for endads.com etc are not from your web broswer, using a pop-up blocker won't work on them. It's an ad for antispam software spamming you thru M$ messaging. Disable that and no more popups. every 1/2 hour I pity Windows users :)
Also Mozilla users get popup blocking builtin.
