Cool Just curious...step up from Parasound NC 2250 for my RTi A7s

Not that I'm going to do anything just yet... and I've been very happy with the Parasound amp thus far. But I see some interesting Parasound amps on Audiogon (I assume John Curl designed):

    HCA1500A - 205w / 2, 60 amps peak

    HCA2200ii - 250w/2, 50 - 90 amps

    Halo A21 - 250w/2, 60 amps peak ($1600 ... expensive)

What are you thoughts on these 3? And what kind of tangible improvements would they bring to the listening experience?

It's my birthday, so humor me

For what used HCA-1500's are selling for, they are a steal. IMO.

+1 on the HCA-1500's! I run two of them vertically bi-amping Magnepan 1.6's. Great sounding amps!

I just realized there was a similar thread about the HCA-2200ii (that I was in, no less), so apologies for what is basically a rehash of this topic.

In that one, it looked like the 2200ii favored a little over the 1500A? Price-wise, looks like the 2200ii goes for about ~$200 more than the 1500A. Perhaps for the extra 50W?

Both still less than what I paid for the 2250.

I know I shouldn't get hung up on the numbers, just trying to understand the differences. I'd be willing to buy either one (and then sell the 2250).

I purchased a 1500a about 2 mo's ago and couldn't be happier. Both the 2200II and the 1500a were on my short list of amps for the price/value. I've been running the 1500a on my 2b's and really love the clean sound and solid bass.

Two weeks ago I pulled my Sunfire Invariant 300/2 from my 1.2tls so I can send it in to fix a hum problem and cap refresh. Since then, I swapped my 1500a over and it's been more than capable w/the bigger speakers. Honestly, the 1500a was available before I found a 2200II, but after getting the 1500a I wish I'd waited for a 2200II.

From what I've read, I'd happily pay the xtra coin over what the 1500a goes for. I'm still contemplating picking one up down the road. My 2 cents, get the 2200II if you can swing it.

Hope this helps in some way.

    John

EDIT: FWIW, I have no experience w/the 2250 so don't know how it compares to either...and happy birthday!

    Thanks for your feedback guys.

Honestly, until I hear one of the other 2 amps (2200ii, 1500A), I won't know how my 2250 stands up to them. I will say that my RTi A7s sound great with the 2250 - and the few reviews I've read about it have been favorable. It was my first amp and I have no buyer's remorse or anything.

The consensus seems to be, though, that the 1500A & 2200mkii are closer to the Halo series in design, than the New Classic series - and that intrigues me :)

@ JayCee, I think I had the same thought process as you, regarding choosing between the 1500A and 2200mkii. If only the 1500A had been on audiogon, I'd probably have picked it up. But, since the 2200ii was on there I decided to go with it.

So ignore my "just curious" ... b/c it's a done deal ;) Happy bday to me!

Awesome, don't you just love it when you get what you want for your birthday! I checked out Audiogon just after I posted and took a look at the listing. I can't imagine you'll be disappointed. I'm interested in your thoughts once you get it.

Ha! Yeah gotta love it! I definitely will post my impressions (and pics) once I have it hooked up. They said they'd ship it out tomorrow - so it'll be a few days via ground.

Here's a guts shot of my 1500a. I purchased it off E-bay. Absolutely perfect condition.

Not to change the subject, but my folks lived in SF for a few years. Dad was in the Army and lived on the Presidio (1990-1992) in the really old/nice housing. He actually worked/commuted to the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge at Baker Beach. He'd walk down to the pier during lunch and throw out crab traps, then pull them up after work. We loved visiting because they were so close to everything. SF is a great city...so much to experience.

Nice - amazes me how the transformers are in these things.

Yeah SF is a great city. I moved out here from VA a few years back, and I still feel like a tourist in the city. Have yet to scratch the surface in terms of exploring. Too bad the traffic is horrible!

Hey - qq. I'm looking at a few photos of the back of the HCA2200ii and I'm not seeing any 12v trigger connections (either the jack or the screw type)

    Photo

Am I missing something? Or am I just going to have to manually turn the amp on / off? My 2250 and 1000A (for the CSi A6) both have triggers

    The HCA-1500A features JFET/MOSFET stages, I don't know that the 2200ii does....

My HCA1500A is going on 8yrs old, and I have no intention of getting rid of it anytime soon.

    Excerpt from manual...

    - Cascode Class A input stages with matched J-FET pairs
    - Hand picked Mosfets in high voltage driver stages

Is that what you're referring to?

It's coming in today! In addition, I picked up some extras...

    - Niles AC-3 so I can continue to be able to trigger the amps on/off
    - screw type banana plugs for the front r/l and center speaker wires (thicker AQ wire )
    - bluejeans RCA ICs for the center speaker (had monsters before), and the surrounds (pre-out to amp)

The NC2250 amp will now power the RTi A1s (12v trigger #1)
12v trigger #2 will go to the HCA1000A and then from there to the Niles AC-3 (both use the bare wire connections).

Only part I'm not looking fwd to is tearing everything down. Plus if I have to move my speakers out of the way ...there is 30 - 40 min spent just getting identical angles / distance from the wall / tv stand.

    That's my evening today :)

It's here ...they shipped it in a giant ass McIntosh amp box. Looks a little dusty - had to tighten some screws underneath and wipe it clean ...but otherwise, it plugged it in and it turned on.

Hey Guys .... need some help here w/ the HCA2200ii. Finished hooking everything up and making sure all ICs / speaker wires were securely connected.

    Couple of observations:

    - noticed a little static sound once or twice when adjusting the volume
    - right now, the right channel seems to be coming in louder than the left (in 2 channel mode)

Update: noticed I didn't tighten the screws on the left speaker's binding posts before hooking up the banana plugs. It's sounding normal now - maybe a bad connection? I'll probably run Audyssey again - it would explain why it had the gain up on the left speaker.

Sorry ... just a little paranoid.

Alright - everything's fine now :) Re-ran Audyssey and it set the levels correctly and I'm all set. I added open screw-type bananas to the front 3 speakers and I think I didn't tighten them enough. Fixed.

I haven't done enough listening to really judge the improvement over the 2250, but the 24/96 FLAC (ripped from the MLP dvd-audio, converted to 2 ch) of Dire Straits' 'Brothers in Arms' showed:

    - more detail in the soundstage
    - more pronounced vocals
    - dead silence in stop / start sections
    - a good amount of low end at lower volumes

Same warmth as the other 2 Parasound amps :)

    Anyway ..some pics..
