Pic of bad crossover???

This is out of an R50 that is getting very low output to the tweeter. Can barely hear it. Tried the good one out of my other speaker same thing.

The pic shows the capacitor (from the crossover)?? (if thats actually what its called?). The top is bulging out and there is a little bit of insulation pushed out also. I dont see or smell anything else unuasual.

Is this likely my problem?? Need new crossover?

That capacitor has gone bad an needs to be replaced. How are your skills with a soldering iron?

Whats a soldering iron. JK Im willing to try it though. What harm could i do? Im waiting on a response from Polk to see how much a new crossover is? I havnt got a clue to what that will cost?

Yeah, it's a bad cap. A crossover will cost a whole lot more than an electrolytic cap.

How do I go about getting a new electrolytic cap. Would the part# be marked on it. How would I get the old one off? Just melt the existing solder off and pull it out? Sounds like a fun project since I just got a quintuple bypass and cant do to much.

Usually I use a vacuum solder removal tool. The value for the cap will be marked on it. It will look something like "12 uf 250V" or something like that.

While you are there replace it with a Poly cap. This will need to be done to both XO's. The performance will increase.

When you say both crossovers do you mean. The same cap on both crossovers or both caps on the (1) crossover.

is the poly cap a different style, make, or what.

A poly cap is a different type of cap. The one that is buldging is an electrolytic. Replace the caps on both boards.

Thanks so much! Here I go. Just removing the old to get the new. What about all this silicone looking stuff on th top of the board? Anything special to do with that? Dont laugh but does Radio Shack have these poly caps? This board is great. Giving me things to play with while I recoop from open heart.

That "silicone" actually is hot glue, they use it to hold components to avoid vibrations etc. make sure the cap is the same as the one you are replacing, for example: if the old cap is 4.4uf and you do not find the same value you can go for the next closest match like 4.6uf, 4.8uf, make sure the voltage is the same or higher than the old one...you do not have to look for polarity since these crossover caps are non-polarized caps.

yes! NP=Non-polarized. you can use better caps than those cheap electrolytic caps, you can use like polypropylene, mylar etc from Parts express.

The closest I can find is a 22uf 50v. Should I go less on the uf or higher. Does this change the sound? The caps I removed are 12uf.

Just visit www.partsexpress.com and type 12uf in the search bar. Snag a pair of Dayton film capacitors.

Bought cheap electrolytic caps and everything works as it should. Thanks so much for the help. I'm placing an order tonight for the good ones. I couldnt wait and it was only $2 bucks for the cheapos. You guys saved me a lot of money even with buying the cheap for now. And, it gave me something to do and some practice soldering during my recovery(by the way Im only 41,5'10" and 185#) so be aware of shortness of breath or chest pains(even minor as mine were) and get to the ER ASAP. Im assuming I saved alot for the crossover but Polk wont get back to me. They are usually great.

Good luck with your recovery. I had triple bypass in 2002 and I was 45 at the time. Keep exercising and watch out for the extreme hot and cold temps. I was back to work 8 weeks after my surgery. Hang in there and keep us posted.
