Help with PSW505

Hello.

My current setup as of now is:

2x Polk Audio Monitor 70's
1 Polk Audio PSW505
Onkyo TX-SV909 Pro

I am very new to audio, so forgive me if I am missing the lingo...

I have connected the subwoofer to the receiver with a single sub woofer cable, the option where the crossover is dictated by the amp on the receiver.

Problem is, I cannot find the crossover settings anywhere. I have looked through the manual and that was no help either.

Any ideas? I'm not sure if I'm getting the full experience with this bass or not.

Welcome to Club Polk!

This seems to be an older non-Dolby Digital receiver. I'm not so sure it supports crossover adjustment. Your best bet may be to upgrade to a more modern receiver.

On page 35, it refers to a Digital Bass Enhancer level and frequency adjustment. I don't think this is an actual crossover adjustment, but probably the closest this receiver has. Also, this receiver cannot decode or pass an actual LFE signal that would be present in a 5.1 source.

If I were to use the non-filtered option, what cables would I have to purchase?

And would I have to wire the speakers to the sub as well, and then wire them back to the receiver?

This is just a basic 2.1 setup, where I have a cable that goes from my sound
card to Video 1, and so forth. I have the wires going straight from the speakers to the receiver, and the the only thing connecting the sub and the receiver is that one cable I mentioned before (I don't know the names of all these cables, sorry if this sounds vague)

I'm a bit hesistant to experiment becuase I don't want to break anything

Okay, so I think I got it.

I took speaker wire from the monitor 70, to the speaker in on the sub, and then speaker wire from the speaker out to the receiver, and I did this on both speakers.

Sounds great! I can definitely notice a difference when I play with the crossover knob, so I think I got it working.

But I'm having issues finding the speaker size setting on my receiver.

Is there some sort of default? I'm looking through the manual right now.

Finally, some quick general questions:

1. Should I shut the sub off when it is not in use?
2. What settings should I try to use in terms of the crossover, from 60hz to 120.
Is it okay if I'm not using either the line in or the LFE in ports?

If 2-channel is what you were trying to accomplish, then I think that's your best option. Glad you thought of it! Speaker-level connection is surely the way to go in your situation. Enjoy!

Set the crossover on your sub to whatever sounds best to you. There probably are no speaker size adjustments to worry about. I'm sure the output is full range.

Hmm, weird issue.

The bass randomly kicks in then kinda fades out, the fades back in. I'm not in any surround mode. It just doesn't seem as constant any more, has less of a presence.

Is that normal?

It was because I unplugged the subwoofer cable. When I plug it back in, the sub is much more powerful. Is this supposed to be plugged in as well?

It should be one connection type or the other, not both. Make sure you're following the connection guidance in the subwoofer manual.

Use an RCA cable (best if it's actually designed for a sub, but any will "work") from Sub Out on your AVR to LFE In on your sub. Gain on sub set at halfway, crossover on sub at its highest, and make sure your AVR is set to Sub = On. Run YPAO. Report back.

What is your source? 5.1 DVD or Blu-Ray? What volume is all the way up - receiver? Sub?
