Onkyo TX-NR708 Audyssey levels problem

Trying to set up the Audyssey auto-calibration on my Onkyo TX-NR708, and having a problem.

It tells me to set my sub to 75 db. I have put my subs (I have 2x subs) on the LOWEST volume, and its picking up 81 db. With subs completely off, it picks up 47 db of subwoofer sound, even though the subs are both off.

If I continue and complete the whole Audyssey set-up, it configures all my speakers to 40hz crossover.

I'm guessing that the Audyssey chip/mic is damaged in the amp (it seems to be picking up LFE noise when it isn't there).

Is there anything I'm doing wrong, or do I need to give Onkyo a call?

The crossover thing isn't a problem, because it's detecting the -3dB point of your speaker's in-room response. You can dial the crossovers up as you like after Audyssey runs. Also, set LPF of LFE to 120 before you start Audyssey, as that is the proper setting to pass the full LFE channel (and Audyssey does NOT adjust this parameter).

You might have some low level noise in your room that's throwing things off. Are you placing the mic on a tripod when you do this? If you're holding it in your hand (which some people foolishly do), it can read just the vibration from you holding it as low-level audio.

If none of that helps, hit Audyssey's website and shoot them a message. They're usually pretty quick to respond. Also, hit AVSforum's lengthy Audyssey thread, which Prof. Chris Kyriakakis of Audyssey frequents.

Not sure what models this affects but there has been a huge recall of Audyssey mic's. You may want to check if yours is one of the recalled.

Where did you get this info? Google for "audyssey microphone recall" comes up with nothing pertaining to a recall...

There's info on where they sent out the wrong mics....but nothing about an actual recall.

+1 on mic placement on a tripod or mic stand. Curious as to how you got your readings and what your speakers are. How are these subs connected? Using the line level input? Check your sub crossover too. Who is the manufacturer of your subs, model number too plaease.

I do not have a mic stand. What I did is placed a small camera tripod on the couch cushion and screwed the mic into the top of the tripod.

My subs are both in the front, about 1/3 from the wall on the left and right. I use the Jamo sub300 subs. Volume on both subs is all the way down. Crossover setting on the subs is all the way up to 150hz.
I changed the phase on the subs to 0, and placed the mic in the right position and got 76db on the subwoofer reading before continuing setup.

After 6 positions Audyssey MultEq calibration, my readings are: 0db for surrounds, -4.5db for center and -4db for front right, -2.5db for front left. Subwoofer was set to -5db.

I have subsequently put the subwoofer level up to +10db. At -5db, the bass is definitely there, but to get the THUMP that I like during movies, I find it way too low. This is why I worry it might be an issue when I need to adjust by 10db.

So Im thinking that its 1 of the options:
1) Something wrong with my Audyssey in my amp.
2) Audyssey's bass levels just set much lower than I like, and I'll have to adjust accordingly, nothing wrong with the actual amp at all.
3) Audyssey is messing up as I don;t have a proper tripod?

Did you plug the subwoofers in correctly? As in the correct location on the sub as well? Check of the manual.

Try setting it up with one sub and see if that changes anything.

My amp has 2 sub outputs and subs connected to both outputs. Then they are connected at the back with LFE input.

Tried with 1 sub and it dropped the db level by around 4 or 5 db

Sign up an account at AVSForum and ask in their official Audyssey thread. I know there is a thread there or portion of dedicated to the problems.

What is your entire equipment list? What speakers, what subs? What amp are you driving the subs with? Is is a pro amp? Is it XLR input?

Get a sound pressure level meter. Set the sub level on your receiver to 0db. Turn off one sub. Adjust volume so to 75 db on the SPL. Turn off that sub. Turn on your other sub. Repeat the process. Your mic should be at ear level when running Audyssey, not on the couch cushion. See attached for more tips.

The A5's are probably set to Full Band - go into your speaker settings and change the value to 60hz. Betcha your bass will be back to the Jamo subs.
