Man, that sucks, I remember when I had to put my last dog down, I'd had him for 14 years, one of the worst things I've ever had to do.

My thoughts go out to you, Oldfatdogs.

I don't envy your position position right now as I've been there many times myself, and it's always a hard and very sad time. We've got three that are all up in years and will be leaving us all to soon.

    The Rainbow Bridge
    inspired by a Norse legend
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,

Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.

Where the friends of man and woman do run,

When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,

Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.

On this golden land, they wait and they play,

Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,

For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.

Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,

Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,

Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.

All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,

Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

    For just at that instant, their eyes have met;

Together again, both person and pet.

So they run to each other, these friends from long past,

The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,

Has turned into joy once more in each heart.

They embrace with a love that will last forever,

And then, side-by-side, they cross over? together.

It's the hardest thing to do, but you do because you love them. I know this pain all too well. I feel for ya, ofd.

Yea it sucks having to do it. I had a great dog that had to be put down. He got in to something and his kidneys where shutting down. Couldnt hold food, or water down. Took him to the vet every day for a week to have 1 L of fluid put in through an eyevee. He still wasnt doing good at the end of the week. It was the hardest thing because when we had him put down. He acted all well all of a sudden. Wanted to go play fetch. It really made you second guess if you were doing the right thing.

They are so loyal and give you so much joy which makes it so hard to say goodbye to your little buddies. I always tell myself that when it's my turn to go to the great big doghouse in the sky, they'll all be waiting for me with wagging tails!

I went through this process few times to often. My dogs were just like one of my kids, they needed my devoted attention and love and when I was faced with the fact that couldn't of any help to them, it was always hurtfull. Because of such I decided to no longer have dogs and care for them. It has been missed on many occasions but I still kept on my decision. As I am getting older, I think it would maybe be time to adopt one again soon as I hope I might be lucky enough to not see him leave this time around. I also believe having another one would be a blessing for my grand children when they drop by.

It's metaphorical, but somehow I get comforted from this poem whenever I need to reflect on the passing of a pet.

My heart is broken, but I was blessed. How could I have known she would give back to me, a million in love...

That's pretty much how I picture it. Something right out of "What Dreams May Come". Thanks for the poem (kinda like what GDB posted above).
