yeah, if the power amp has a problem, it can do "weird things".

The sound is not stable. It varies in volume and tone, really does sound strange. The amp is a Nakamichi PA5-II. I am going to try my Rotel RB970BX. I hope it has the power to drive my 2.3TL's. The cd player was swapped out and still the same. My turntable also will do the same thing. If it is not the power amp than the preamp might be bad.
Sounds like it might be the pre. Switching out the amps will help determine that. It could be something as simple as needing some DeOxit on the controls or RCAs, or it could be something more serious.
t...3 and others can help you diagnose this better as you start experimenting with your set-up.
Hope it's something, simple!

Try the Rotel at lower volumes and get back with us. What you are experiencing is not normal, as if I need to tell you this....

It may be time for the Nak to be refreshed as well. THat PA5 is a great amp worthy of the cost to restore.
HT Setup... Pioneer Elite SC-37, Polk Audio SDA-SRS 1.2TL's Restored with full mods, Polk Audio RM-7500 Surrounds, Oppo BDP 93
Two Channel... Carver Statement 450~1 Vacuum Tube Monoblocks, Dodd Mid-line Tube Linestage with Psvane 12Ax7 tubes, Pioneer Pdd 9Mk II SACD Player, Yamaha PX-3 Turntable with Sumiko BPS EvoIII, Polk Audio SDA-SRS 1.2TLs, with full mods.
Benghazi was more than just FUBARED...
Swapped amps, sound cleared up. Will play for a few days to see if it holds, then will swap back to the Nak5 to see if it comes back. Thanks for the suggestions!
Is the Nakamichi a common ground power amp?
