Default Anyone checking out Record Store Day 16 April at your local independent record store?

I have a big list of wants and a little list of what I should only buy! :)

I'll probably not spend too much, but I do have a short list of what I want.

Steve Hoffman mastering of Fleetwood Mac Rumours 45 rpm edition 4 albums
    Pink Floyd: London 66/67
Syd Barett: Intro to Sid Barett
Joan Jett 180 gram clear vinyl release of I Love Rock & Roll
Kate Bush Hounds of Love Collector's Edition
    Nirvana: Hormoaning (coloured vinyl)

Anyone else going to see what they have?

Love the cover to the Pink Floyd 66/67, only seen it on a dvd, but will be good to get in on an album.

Yeah,on 140 right across from Dunk'in Donuts, right? Joe's record paradise was the one in Gaithersburg, it moved to Silver Spring. How far are you from Towson? http://www.recordandtapetraders.com/

The Record and Tape Trader in Towson rocks ! Lots of cool other stuff there as well (DVD's, games, etc). If you decide to go R&TT, there is another used media outlet (CDepot) on Loch Raven Blvd that is about 5 minutes away. Last time I was there they were stocking more vinyl. If its vinyl you want check out Trax on Wax in Catonsville, moderator Ken told me about that place. Its very cool with the whole hippie vibe going for it. Cheers.

Plan on being down in Kailua Beach today at Hungry Ear Records. Last year's RSD was cool, this year's should be too. Never know what kind of new music you'll discover.

Might buy some but my main reason to visit my store is to finally pick up my turntable that's been out of commission for years. I guess it's fitting that I'm doing this on Record Store Day.

got back, did not find Hounds of Love or Pink Floyd. got most others that looked interesting. :)

If anyone is out an about and finds Kate Bush "Hounds of Love" 10" vinyl Record Store Day release, if you picked it up I would purchase it from you and pay the shipping. Would also throw in a few extra bucks for you time!

I would have loved to go, but couldn't. My son did go to Vintage Vinyl in Edison - got there at 8:30 when they opened, had to wait in line over 3 hours to get in. He picked up few cool things.

Mark, I sense either vehemence or sarcasm. Assuming the former, why such a strong negative feeling about RSD?

Blake and I struck out with that too. You can always pay dearly for the ones listed on ebay.... The folks at the record stores tell us they didn't get the amount they had ordered. Like, rationing.

We did our usual and hit a couple stores in Madison, WI and our fav Disc Replay in Rockford, IL. I came home with 40 used CD's, no vinyl. It was a good day.

Rich (SCompRacer) and I had a great time music store hopping on RSD. Here's a note I typed up about our experience (originally intended for another forum, but it fits in this thread as well).

    ---
For those of you who may not know, today is Record Store Day. Hundreds of indie music stores across the country (and around the world) dedicate today to the wonderful symbiotic relationship of music consumer and music provider. There are raffles, free food, exclusive vinyl and CD releases (this year they numbered over a hundred), live music, and lots of reduced price merchandise. It's a celebration, in part, of still being in business and bucking the unfortunate trend of indie music store bankruptcy. There is a hard-earned and well-deserved "we're still here!" vibe that permeates the participating stores. But that's not the only vibe you sense. Gratitude pops up in spades. The owners of these stores are genuinely thankful for the support of regional customers who choose to purchase their music locally rather than buy it off iTunes or order it from Amazon. This is the day they get to say "thank you".

It's easy to write RSD off as just another promotion to get people to spend their money; another ploy to coax people into becoming mindless consumers. But to see it that way is to miss the point. As the official Record Store Day website points out, for many of the participating stores, this day brings in more revenue than any other day of the year. And it's this revenue that allows them to stay afloat for another year. If I can go out and spend some money to support my favorite record store on RSD, then I am happy to do so.

My friend Rich and I drove in to Madison, WI to hit our favorite music store and show our support. That store? Mad City Music. I've shopped there dozens of times over the past few years and the staff is always friendly and helpful. It was not as crowded as I expected (there were still parking spot available up front), but there was definitely an increase in patrons. Typically I see three or four other people in the store, and today there were at least twenty five that I saw come in and leave the store (most of them having made a purchase). The owner was circulating giving out handshakes and hugs to a clientele he has obviously become very close to. Patrons were excited to get their hands on the RSD exclusive releases (I found three out of the four I was looking for at Mad City) and the mood was very upbeat. No one was talking about how hard it was to be an indie music store, or what bleakness the future might bring. Instead, everyone was enjoying the fact that their favorite record store was still around.

There were fathers and daughters talking about what songs they both like (one girl who couldn't have been over six-years-old asked, "Daddy, do you have this Flaming Lips CD?" to which he replied, "Yes, but thanks for pointing that out to me"). I wasn't the only one who chuckled at her cuteness. Other patrons were discussing their favorite blues artist with other customers. Some were talking about the best way to flatten warped vinyl. Others were talking about how nice it would be to have the Queen catalog remastered.

This may all sound geeky to you, but I had an overwhelming sense of belonging. These people spoke my language. In a world where music is rapidly becoming something people put on in the background while performing a more important task, these people understand the importance of keeping music alive. There are very few social situations that I feel comfortable in, but today felt like I'd finally found people with whom I clicked. And it was great.

Music has been the one vice that I've never tried to curtail in any meaningful way. As financial times have become more difficult and I've had to tighten my belt on many aspects of my life, I've never shied away from buying music. It's that important to me. I spent a substantial sum of money at Mad City today, but it was worth every penny. And I hope my patronage (however small in the larger scheme of things) helps to ensure that they're around for many years to come.

We also stopped at Strictly Discs and made a few small purchases, but the vibe there is different. They've always been more commercial (and snobbish) than Mad City. On the other hand, they were giving away a ton of promo CDs and I managed to snag three by artists that sound very interesting. They had a lot of stock on hand and were handing out free beer an pizza to all the customers. Again, there was an increase in people shopping compared to an average Saturday, but it wasn't a line out the door. We managed to get in, look at all the CDs, and get out in about 30 minutes, and only waited five minutes in line to check out.

Overall it was a good day. I came home with quite a few discs (and even some RSD-exclusive vinyl) and got to hang out with a good music friend. My only regret is that I couldn't find a copy of the limited edition Kate Bush 10" single on blue vinyl which was a RSD-exclusive release. I'm sure I'll be able to pick one up on eBay, but it's going to cost an arm and a leg.

I will definitely be participating in next year's festivities!
