    Default Ubuntu Tar.gz file problem?

I need some help, I have a file X.tar.gz and I can't expand it as it errors out.

gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
    tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

If it's any help the file is from the Evolution backup 10.x.x ubuntu to Evolution ubuntu 11.0.4

Is there a way to recover this file?

Can you show the command line arguments you're passing?

What happens at the command line with

    gunzip X.tar.gz

If that works there should now be a X.tar

    Now try

    tar -xvf X.tar

Try just tar -xf X.tar.gz. If it expands, it wasn't really a gzipped tar file, just a tar. If it still doesn't, it's either not really a tar file, or it's corrupted and you need to try downloading it again.

You could also try to determine the file type with head -1 X.tar.gz and see what the first few characters on the line are. gzip files will say, IIRC, gzip.

    So this didn't work...

    steve@steve-MXC051:~$ tar -xf evolution-backup.tar.gz

gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
    tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
    tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

    But this did something different....
    steve@steve-MXC051:~$ tar -xvzf evolution-backup.tar.gz
    .evolution/
    .evolution/mail/
    .evolution/mail/searches.xml
    .evolution/mail/pop/
    .
    .
    .
    .evolution/mail/local/Inbox.ibex.index

gzip: stdin: invalid compressed data--format violated
    tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
    tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

    Confused.

The "v" is just a verbose flag, so that's why it was "different." it gave you more information.

Not really sure, it looks like it at least starts to decompress and then hits a corrupted part o f the file? If it weren't really a valid archive it wouldn't be able to read the directory structure like it does, so obviously some part of it is correct. Can you re-download or find a new source for the download?

Odd. Compression on a compressed file?
TAR is already compressed. Why is it also GZ?

TAR does not compress, it merely groups a bunch of files into a single file. GZIP does the compression but only works on single files (unlike on Windows or Mac OS).

I'm screwed,,,, I did the backup but I rewrite the hd to update the ubuntu to 11.0.4

I did something wrong on my old 10.x.x, I deleted the network-manager so I couldn't get back on line to fix it. So this why did what I did.
