Hokay, so, took the plunge and bought a new flat screen HDTV and a blu-ray player.....and I'm getting back into HD.

I've got some connection questions....as all I've got is an OLD Denon HT receiver that doesn't have 5.1 or 7.1 analog inputs.

What I did, was run HDMI from the playa to the TV and a coax digital from the playa to the receiver. Now, on standard DVD, this seems to work fine. On a Blu Ray disc (played first one last weekend)....no audio out ot the reciever. WTF? Do I have to have and HDMI receiver?? What if I have a receiver with analog surround inputs (the BR player does have analog surround outputs)? C

JHC, I thought I slayed these dragons years ago...

Analog inputs will give you lossless audio from a blu-ray player that can internally decode and output analog to the AVR. However, each blu-ray disk should have a DD or DTS 'core' that can be output to toslink and coax for backwards compatibility. But you can't play back lossless using the older digital connections.

So if you're getting nothing with blu-rays, sounds like a configuration problem somewhere up the chain so the DD or DTS 'core' track isn't selected in the player or being received properly by the AVR.

Troy, go into the players setup menu, make sure the output is set to PCM and not Bitstream. That may be the problem.

^ 10-4. Some players even have to have the digital output "activated" to work.

I doubt the issue is in the player because it's sending the audio to the TV via HDMI if I understand your setup correctly. If that's the case, check the audio out settings on your TV

Still, the DVDs seem to work, so maybe something not selected properly in the menus of the player...or do you mean this works with another DVD only player not DVDs played by the blu-ray player?

In the Denon
Make sure you assign the coax input to the input your using for the Blu ray , I'm assuming DVD so assign Coax 1 to DVD (if you plugged it into 1)
Also after you assign the Denon input to input correctly , make sure the Denon is set to "auto decode" for incoming signals. Even with the input assigned to the correct Digital input , it still can be looking for a analog signal IF the input is set to look for Analog.

In the Blu Ray player
Set the digital out to ON or Bitstream or PCM. This will allow the signal to pass out the Digital coax out.

Cable
Make sure your using a quality Digital coax cable , dont use a analog cable which can work but can lose signal due to not being a true 75ohm connection.

Honestly Troy I strongly suggest getting a new receiver. If I remember correctly you have a modest surround system and don't need anything to high end. I suggest looking at the following receivers and buy one.

Pioneer Elite VSX21txh used. You can find one around 300 bucks. This is a fantastic workhorse that you can recreate the length of time you owned that damn denon which I think is a avr1901?

Really I was going to list a few more but now I thought about it , the 21 will serve you well not to mention friends can come over and connect their Ipod to it and you guys can listen to their music as well. Pretty cool it has a bunch of other very cool features.

If you want something else just let me know. I have some used Denon's laying around the shop that I'd love to move. I'm sure I can cut you a killer deal bro.

get a friggen blu-ray player with analog outs so you can figure out what your doing and hook it to the analog multi-in on your reciever, dont be a dumb ass, it sort of like a SACD analog hookup.

The problem there is, mon frere, is that my receiver (for whatever reason) doens't have multi-channel analog inputs....I think the problem is that I didn't have the output on the BR player correct.

Between the backwards compatibility and the new connections and formats, it's a wonder that anyone is able to dial in their HTs without the help of an installer. But with a little patience and manual/menu searching, things usually work out. Hope you get it figured out. The ps3 I use as a player has seperate settings for DVD and blu-ray playback. So it's possible for DVDs to go to the legacy digital connection and blu-rays to go to HDMI etc. You really have to check nearly every output menu setting to make sure the player's output configuration is what you want it to be.

Do new Bluray players still support lossless on analog ouputs, or is it next year when all players will stop allowing that?
