New member, New Monitor 10A's

Hello all, my first post on this forum!

I sold some Klipsch KG3.2's this morning and was talking to the gentleman, who let me know that he would be replacing a pair of Polk speakers that had dead tweeters. Through conversation I deduced that they were Monitor 10's and worked out a deal with him for a partial trade on the Polk's.

I'm not new to the Polk world as I've owned a pair of SDA 2's before as well as a pair of Monitor 5's. Unfortunately they both had the "less good sounding" tweeter in them and, even though there were aspects of the sound I really enjoyed (SDA especially), I ended up selling them. These Monitor 10's have the Peerless tweeters, unfortunately I think they spent some time in the grueling conditions of a party house and they are fried.

I removed one to test it and the number on the back is very difficult to make out, but appears to start with 75xxxxx. From my research it would seem these are the early made in Denmark version of these tweeters.

I've been wanting to try the Monitor 10's for some time now and would love to get these going. If I can find the appropriate tweeters I might even rebuild the crossovers with higher quality components.

Any advice you can give me? Haunt Ebay in search of a replacements?

Polk has direct replacements for them that are supposed to be on par with the Peerless. If they are on par, like everyone says they are, then its a great sounding tweeter. I believe they would cost you right around $45-50 per.

I keep hearing that the Peerless is a tweeter that polk does not have a substitute for. Maybe that has changed. If not, try midwest.

This is what I've been reading as well, Midwestspeaker is selling a "Peerless Copy" on Ebay but states that some modification to the cabinet may be necessary.

If you originally had peerless tweets, I'm fairly certain a peerless copy would drop right in. Some of the SL series of tweeters had different sized face plates, and require modification to drop a peerless in their place.

Did the Peerless tweeters test bad? There is no direct replacement for the Peerless except another Peerless. You can find Peerless tweeters on e-bay and some CP members list some for sale from time to time. The SL 1000 will fit in the recess easily but the hole pattern is just slightly different. It seems unusual for both tweeters to go bad unless they were severely over or under driven. A low powered amp, such as you might find in some receivers, is more likely to destroy speakers than a high powered one.

I've removed one so far and the voice coil tests open, I suspect the other will test the same. Apparently they were in the possession of a person who liked to play them very loud, quite likely with a sub par amp.

I will remove the other and verify that it is bad. The speakers are in very nice condition otherwise and seem good candidates for restoration.

I stand corrected. I could've sworn one of the RDO's were considered a replacement.


If you contact Polk, definitely call them during regular business hours. Their email responses leave much to be desired, but their phone service is top notch.

Good news, I worked a deal for a set of the Peerless tweeters and the seller is also going to include a set of rebuilt crossovers!

I'll report back with my impressions...

I bought 2 Peerless Copy tweeters from Midwest Speaker for my 10b's they droped right in.
