Can you list all the things the SVS will smoke the M&K in? Why? and how? Im sure the list is endless, but I plan on forwarding your response to my Dad. So...make it really convincing :D

Can you make this non-public? I really don't want to know how much an SVS will smoke an M&K, particularly an M&K 150MKII sub seeing as I bought one before I read these forums and for the same price I could have a PB2-Plus...

    LOL

Just kidding, I'd like to hear what you have to say. I'm temped to get an SVS too someday as a second sub (or replace my M&K). Although I really like my M&K. It is a hugh leap up form only having my RT10s.

Sid, why don't you search the posts Doc has made on SVS, or better yet, read his review (and others) at the svs website.

I think it will be obvious, by reading about what they (svs) WILL do, it will become apparent what the M&K simply cannot.

On a side note, you should have pops front you the money for the replacement driver for your 90, then put the s.o.b. up on ebay. I'd be willing to bet you get HALF of your SVS fund taken care of right then and there (minus paying back pops for the driver).

    Cheers,

The M&K is already sold to a local friend, She is paying me monthly, but she has yet to start payments on it and is still paying off the Yamaha receiver...

My Dad has this whole Pride issue going on, he swears his M&K will embarress the SVS...

There really isn't much to say Sid, that hasn't been said already.

The SVS PB2-ISD (the last model you were interested in) will play flatter, louder, cleaner, and deeper than any M&K even remotely in its price range.

You would probably have to get into a $2,000 MX-350 MK II THX ULTRA to even get close.

This link pretty much tells what you need to know about M&K. The real test of a sub is how loud it can play at 25 Hz before it starts to audibly distort. Distortion becomes audible at 10% for most people.

The $1,200 M&K MX-125 MKII can only play 95 dB at 25 Hz in a 2,000 ft3 room before distortion reaches 10%. That is a piss poor performance any way you cut it.

If you look at the dual SVS combo, it hit 115 dB in comparison, and that was with the OLD driver. The Improved Standard Driver used in the PB2-ISD betters that number by at least 3 dB per driver.

A conservative estimate for the $900 PB2-ISD would be 118 dB at 25 Hz in the same size room at the same 10% distortion limit.

That's a 23 dB difference - which is astronomical. In other words it would take eight (8) MX-125's to equal the CLEAN output of one (1) PB2-ISD.

Remember, that doesn't mean the MX-125 can't play louder than 95 dB at 25 Hz. That means it can't play louder than 95 dB at 25 Hz before it starts to distort more than 10%. If you wan't clean deep bass (and who doesn't), the M&K simply can't deliver.

The SVS can and will deliver much cleaner, louder, and deeper bass at a far lower cost than even the cheapest M&K.

Your father seems to have at least some disposable income. Order the SVS and you have a 45 day no questions asked money back guarantee. Compare it to your father's M&K and if it doesn't outclass it in every respect, then simply return it. It's really that simple.

Thank ya Doc for your time. My Dad and I have been arguing about this for a while, and I thought I would ask you for a more 'qualified' response. Your reply has been forwarded to him, thank you. That response could mean you just sold 2 more SVS's... ;)

His response was: Why would I need a subwoofer that could play that loud if I don't play something that loud? Which in fact he does. He is forgetting movies...which he plays pretty loud. The bass tracks in LOTR which barely was heard, sometimes felt - I have a feeling would be much better with a SVS...

Hey Doc, you said the PB2-ISD was $900 on your post but the web site said it is listed at $1299. I am planning on getting a PB1-ISD @ $599 because the PB2 was a little out of my range, but if it is $900 I think I can swing it. Please let me know which is the correct price or if it is discounted.
    Thanks!

    acdds:

There are three woofers SVS currently uses:

    1) The Improved Standard Driver (ISD for short).
    2) The TC Sounds dB-12 Plus driver.
    3) The TC Sounds TV-12 Ultra driver.

The $900 PB2-ISD and the $1,200 PB2-Plus share the same enclosure.

The PB2-ISD uses two ISD woofers, 600 watts, and three 3" ports.

The PB2-Plus uses two dB-12 Plus woofers, 900 watts, and three 4" ports.

The PB2-Plus has about a 5 dB advantage over the PB2-ISD in maximum clean output.

    Sid:

The benefits of a superior subwoofer are felt and heard at all volumes, not just at the max. Most HT systems generate bass peaks somewhere in the 105-110 dB range at the listening position at a "pretty loud" overall playback level. You will most definitely hear and feel the advantage of the PB2-ISD over a lesser subwoofer even at those volumes.

And you will hear it for music at all volumes; lower distortion and flatter/deeper frequency response translates into superior accuracy at any volume.

The glowing testimonials of the many new SVS owners at Club Polk cannot all be wrong; they make GREAT subwoofers at a very reasonable asking price. That translates into unparalleled performance value. All you risk is return shipping. SVS is not afraid to step into the ring with any big name brand including M&K - even at a significant price disparity.

This is one of the things I like best for both movies and HT. DEEP response at even low volumes. You just don't always need to crank the volume to appreciate an SVS! Then again, at other times, you do! :D

M&K, when the speakers are playing about 100, the M&K will be playing 99 or somehthing of that nature, its just over powered by Polk speakers, which don't even play loud to start with...

Nah, I don't think his dad is cheap.. perhaps he doesnt want to shell out 900.00 bucks.. he just bought the Rti70's. what a dad as it is !!! The 14 year old M&K will obviously (sp) be destroyed by the SVS even the PB1 maybe much less the Pb2-isd... I think for $600.00 bones the PB1 would be more then enough for the bedroom.. Its not like if you had to sell it to upgrade to a bigger SVS you couldn't sell it nearly at cost easily........

I already want the pb2-isd anybody wanna loan me 3 bones? LOL

olny problem i have when playing low is over excurson of the drivers. i can easley go to 110 at lower hz but when i start to go past i over drive the subs. 1 bonous to drive a sub with alot of power you have alot lower thd levels till reaching over driveing.

You pay less for the same performance w/ cylinders. But, in a multi woofer sub or if placement or the wife dictates, then boxes have their place.

Bryan - just yank out those ports and shorten them up a bit - your sub is tuned too low and you are getting major excursion right before the tune point. Your sub will be able to play a lot louder afterward.

Sid - the shipping cost is $50 during the introductory phase. Once it's over it will go to $100 instead of $50.

Give your Dad $100 for shipping bother ways and tell him if the SVS doesn't beat the M&K in all respects, then he has permission to spend the $100 on shipping and return it.

That's putting your money where your mouth is.
