Default Need a Turntable on the CHEAP

Hey guys, thanks in advance for the help. My system is mainly digital so I don't want to spend a ton of money on a new TT. I've heard money spent on TT's is better spent on today's tables as opposed to vintage tables. So I'm looking for a newer table with wood trim preferably (trying to match my SDA-2B's real wood version) that I can find used under $200. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to turntables, so bare with me.

I've heard Rega is a good place to start.

You have that notion "bass ackwards" IMO, unless......you're going into high end stuff, then, newer is probably better.However.... I've read that the new Thorens TTs under $800.00 are pretty much crap and not worthy of the name badge. Here's some real wood and a TT that you can keep alive almost forever. (Same one I have.)

No matter how lost you are.......music can bring you home. (there are a few exceptions, however)

Not sure how you feel about eBay or your budget, but this might be one to watch. If it goes much higher I would probably pass on it. The seller says it's working great but needs a new stylus. I have this same TT and while not high end it has a good sound and pleasing to the eye as well. No affiliation

Take a look at Denon. I had a DP-52f that was a wonderful table, and had a Rosewood plinth to boot.

The Dual is a fine turntable but bidding is getting a little high. Turntables are the most delicate of all items I've bought off the bay. If they are not packed correctly by and experienced packer they WILL be damaged. The seller of one of the Denons is having it packed AND insured by UPS. While UPS can sometimes mishandle packages I've had them pack a couple of items and they've done a good job.
You can buy a very cheap new turntable that may meet your needs.

George Grand usually has a ton of old TT he sells between $50-100+. I don't know if he'd ship one, since he 'prefers' local pick up and you have to be 'off' his Ignore List?

At San Diego you're a continent away from GG in Jersey so maybe this is not the greatest suggestion but the money goes to a good cause. I'd see what Mr. Grand has in stock and get my feet wet there if that is possible. I, for, one don't subscribe to the 'sky is the limit when it comes to TT'. It's an old format that has its place and can sound quite good but for me the jury is still out.

The others, above, have a lot more 'experience' and a lot more money tied into this than I do with my low cost used Technics?

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the info/links guys. I'm looking at some locally, I just have no clue what to look for. I'd like to hear more about different brands like what to steer clear from and what to look out for. I see an old Yamaha YP-211 with a new belt and no cartridge going for $85 in my area.

while I don't have a turntable.... I have been toying with the idea ... there's alot of good reading on turntables by using the search function & simply typing turntable ... here's one but there are many others. Hope this helps a bit .. and yes some of the links inside of each post will certainly be out of date

audiocr381ue, I have four or five in the $60-$125 range if your interested. For that kind of money you should be able to find one in your back yard and avoid shipping.

So do I, and the last sentence is the most meaningful. Don't be in a rush buying everything you see around right off, just cause it's $5 or $10. Do a little of your own legwork (reading), and you just might be flabbergasted at what the first $5 or $10 will get you if you're armed with a little knowledge.
