    Good actor, bad attitude.

"and then get out." Perhaps, it would be better if he just stayed out.

I'm willing to bet Johnny enjoys the American dollar quite well, if nothing else.

eff johnny and the horse he rode in on. what really amazes me is that the press bothers to publish what he thinks. just because he's an "actor" his opinion means something?

    Wallstreet,

Well - lets put it this way. It got someones attention, attention enough to bring it to every forum I visit. It also brings enough interest for people to read and respond.

I think that was the intended goal.......and it seems to be working quite well.

Yep, it worked very well. Probably well enough to put him on some crazies hit list. That makes old Johnny boy pretty effn stupid in my book.

I honestly could care less what these actors and actresses say or do. If they are good at their profession, so be it, I'll enjoy that. What they say in life makes no never mind to me.

Depp is no different than you or I, period! If any of you can tell me you have never slammed, put down or bagged on another country, then you must be able to walk on water.

Someone here just slammed France, why aren't you guys bagging on him? It's no different than what Depp just did.

That's the point. Our opinions are just as worthless as Johnny's. Another item of interest, Arnold S. got hit with an egg yesterday. He never got hit with an egg when he was a movie star. Which goes to show you that we treat our movie stars better than our politicians!

    For what it is worth...

For some reason this did not bother me since it was quoted in Germany. If he said it here in the states...maybe. Oh well live and learn.

I agree that we shouldn't care about actors opinions JUST because they're actors..........

    but...

I gotta agree that the whole "Freedom Fries" thing was pretty effin pathetic and embarassing. I don't know that there's anything we've done that made ourselves look like retards like that did.

It bothers me when actors and actresses make millions and millions of dollars in the U.S (we can deny it, but thats where their wealth comes from) and then they sit in a foriegn country and trash the very people that allow them to live the lives they lead. I bet his tone would be very different if he didn't have all that money and luxury around him.

It also bothers me that people take what a drug induced numbskull who is a good ACTOR has to say about American foriegn and domestic policy as gospel.

This is the same guy, along with the Dixie Chicks, who will bitch about the consequences of their fat mouths. If you say something unpopular you have to deal with the consequences of what you say. That is how it works. Why should I give you $8 to see your movie when you trash my country?

If a guy who owns a hardware store says he doesn't like white people and the word spreads in the community chances are his business will suffer.

So I guess I can severely disagree with the broad generalizations of Depp's uneducated opinion, but I can't bag him for speaking his mind. However, as I said, some things are best left unsaid unless you're willing to deal with the consequences of what you say. ESPECIALLY when you're a public figure and you rely on them to provide for you.

    ...and here's the update;

    http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp.../people_depp_1

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Denying any anti-American sentiment on his part, actor Johnny Depp (news) said on Thursday that quotes attributed to him as likening the United States to a "dumb puppy" were inaccurate and taken out of context.

"I am an American. I love my country and have great hopes for it," Depp said in a statement released by his Los Angeles-based publicist. "It is for this reason that I speak candidly and sometimes critically about it. I have benefited greatly from the freedom that exists in my country and for this I am eternally grateful."

Depp, currently starring in the swashbuckling film "Pirates of the Caribbean," issued the statement a day after the German news magazine Stern published an interview in which he ridiculed Washington's confrontation with France, where he lives, over the U.S. war in Iraq (news - web sites).

The magazine quoted the actor as saying "America is ... like a dumb puppy that has big teeth that can bite and hurt you, aggressive." He was further quoted as saying he wanted his children to "see America as ... a broken toy" that they should explore, get the feel of, then "get out."

Explaining his comments a day later, Depp he had been using a metaphor that was taken "radically out of context," adding, "There was no anti-American sentiment."

"What I was saying was that, compared to Europe, America is a very young country and we are still growing as a nation," he said. "My deepest apologies to those who were offended, affected, or hurt by this insanely twisted deformation of my words and intent."

His spokeswoman added that the Kentucky-born Depp, 40, lives in the south of France with his family because his wife, actress-singer Vanessa Paradis (news), is French.

Part of the price we pay for having freedom of speech is that we are likely to hear the stupid opinions of other people expressing freely. If you don't like what Depp said, don't go to or rent his movies.

I'm sure a little bit of both is true... he probably was talking big for the foreign press, a press that already likes to dis the U.S.; and knowing the press, he most likely WAS taken out of context to some extent.
