I stick with good old ripping cd's in uncompressed format. Most of the stuff you get offline is compressed.

Do you torrent??? Check out utorrent ( a bittorrent client) and sites like Piratebay.org (has a whole loseless section as well as MP3's).
Buy the CD if you enjoy it; you dont want to get Lars of Metallica all riled up again

yeah but that's only for people who care about legal and moral issues
I second the cd route. I mean, other than instant gratification I just don't understand the downloading craze for those of us who care about audio quality. I buy almost all of my cds used on amazon and ebay and rip them lossless. You have excellent sq, the portability of digital files, and an extra backup.
I think though the reason polkfarmboy stated HDtracks in his original post was he was referring to where you can get lossless files that are as good as or better than CD quality, hence why my list of 4 sites did not include Itunes, rhapsody, napster or Amazon. Yes you can buy CDs and rip them but you can't rip SACD for Hi Res music and some people are willing to pay for the convenience of downloading the music w/o having to go out and buy the CD. plus some of these sites have rare and otherwise unobtainable selections.
I was asking about high res downloadable sites and should have specified
I wish hdtracks had more to offer as the quality is outstanding
Didn't mean to sound like a jerk...I shouldn't figured that that was the case. I don't have the equipment, coin, or correct taste to enjoy hi-rez downloads. I imagine its basically the same as with sacd/dvd audio: there just aren't enough people buying them, which is too bad.
I dont think you came off as a jerk and I should know as I am the king of the jerks
You dont really need anything special for high res music, all I have is the hdmi running from my laptop to the receiver and it sounds better than sacd hooked up via rca
Hdtracks is giving away a free 4 song sampler to convince folk that high res sounds great and it does
You can Search many free, safe, no-registration music downloading sites. . . . The best way to get music is by buying it & so supporting the artist .
Carbonless form printing
How about LegalSounds.com? 9 cents per song.
Legal, But Not Legal: The Ethics of Russian Music Download Sites
I figured you should at least know who and what's behind the site.

Why not just buy the damn music. It is relatively cheap for the enjoyment you get out of it and you support the industry in order to keep it alive.
