That Ortogon is what Brian at Needledoctor suggested to me today for either a Torens TD-160, Pioneer PL-540, or a JVC QL-77 that I have all recently restored to working order. I wish I had a definitive answer at to which one of these is "the best" table..

But, the 2M Red seems to be the concensus with the Shure M97xE getting high consideration, too. I may go with the Shure for what most describe as a warmer sound - it's only about $75 at J&R.

I recently bought a Shure M97XE on the recommendation of several CP members and I am very happy with it in my Thorens TD-160.

I just bought a NOS Azden ymP20e.on Audiogon for like $78. It is fantastic! In a side by side comparison with a Grado prestige black and a Stanton 280e it smoked them both. The highs are so accurate it is incredible. The lows are accurate too, but they are somewhat laid back. That is true for the Grado as well. The Stanton has great bass, but that's it everything else is muddy or missing.

The Shure cartridge quality has declined seriously in recent years. There have been reports of the stylus being misalligned, and the frequency response is narrow compared to the Ortofon red above (the blue is even better).

Your cartridge selection should reflect the type of music you prefer and the quality of the vinyl you are trying to play. I abbandoned my Thorens turntable for a Technics SL1200MK2. The tone arm allows me to change cartridges based on what I'm spinning. For example a DJ cartridge is more than adequate if you are playing an old scratched LP. The stiff suspension will allow you to add tracking weight and play through many of the scuffs and scratches that a Denon DL110 would have trouble navigating. However if you are going for detail and your vinyl is virgin then the Denon is appropriate.

    X2,

That's what Jerry (?)said to me at the needle doctor. He asked what type of music and condition of records. He knew what type of turntable I had from me calling and telling him that first off. He recomended the DJ replacement stylus over a lighter shafted one. I was very pleased when I played my older Classic rock and easy listening genre. I then bought a Denon DL-160 from Starkiller I think on this forum. I have yet to install it though.....

I did just jump on the latest clearing out of the Shure M97xE and got mine for 59.00 shipped from J&R Music world. I then put that one on and it has more detail but less bass than that Staunton M681S (I think) with that DJ stylus.

I have a Stanton cart on a backup TT. It's a DJ one don't remember the number but it is awesome for Classic Rock and Disco or Dance music.

not quite "under $100" and not always available at the price... but when Comet Supply has the Denon DL-103 for $118... well, I am not aware of better bang for the buck, full stop. Of course, the low output, low compliance Denon requires 1) a suitably massive arm and 2) a step-up transformer or high gain MC preamp... so the total cost of ownership might require some addittional investment... but, jeepers, you wanna talk about real, visceral musicality per buck spent?!

Obviously just my hardly-humble opinion. In terms of inexpensive MM (or MI) cartridges, I (still) like the Grados and the Shure M97xe is a perfectly solid performer. FWIW, I don't care at all for the sound of Audio-Technica cartridges in general (and especially the cheaper ones) - bright, thin, brittle-sounding; not my cup of tea at all. I have NOT heard any of the new Ortofon line; by and large, though, I've liked Ortofons (but never owned one).

    all the best,
    mrh

Mark, what is a suitably massive arm? Would the standard arms on a Thorens TD-160, Pioneer PL-540, or JVC QL-7 qualify? Or, are we looking at stepping up a bit?

That's actually why I threw in the vanity photo in my post. The Thorens, and in fact my Marantz (Clearaudio) ars are too light; the standard-issue Japanese S-shaped arm of the 70s is borderline OK (i.e., the latter two are probably OK)... I chucked my DL-103 in an SL-Q2 that happened to be gathering dust in the basement. Even heavier old arms are even better (early 1960s transcription arms, e.g.)... don't forget that the DL-103 came out in something like 1960 :-)

Denon does make some higher compliance (it's all relative!) MCs, as do other suppliers... but not for $118 street price :-)
    all the best,
    mrh

The Ortofon 2M Red is a very good cart IMO.

Recently I have used the AT-120E, Ortofon Red and Blue. The Red is nice for the price and competes well with the AT 120. The AT-120 can be found for 70 to 78 online. I have not found the Red for under $99.00. The Blue has less noise and fuller sounding then both of them but cost $199.00.

Any of the 3 I mentioned work great. Best bang for the buck would be the AT-120 at $70.00 and then the Red at $99.00.

The red seemed to track better then the 120 but the 120 is a nice cart..

I've never heard one, but have read stellar reviews on the AT440MLa. I was giving serious consideration into buying one a couple years ago before ultimately deciding on the now discontinued Denon, DL160.

Not a bad price here, but I have seen them go on sale at amazon for just under a hundred.

    http://www.amazon.com/Technica-Repla...8298754&sr=8-2

Edit: If you can bump your budget up another 40.00 bucks, take a look at the Denon, DL110. Similar to the DL160. High Output, Moving Coil that still performs well in MM phono stages.

The Denon DL-103 is a great cartridge, but I believe has a very low compliance rating of 5 and it requires a heavy/sturdy tonearm assembly to make it work properly. Bass response suffers when you don't properly match the cartridge to the tonearm.

Your Yamaha TP-211 tonearm is relatively light and will do best with a higher compliance cartridge. The Ortofon 2M Red is rated at 20 (plenty high-enough) and I believe the Shure is rated at 23 or even 25. Those would both be great choices at your price point.
