I was all set to do the upgrades to my original 2.3's then I saw an ad on Craigslist...... SDA SRS with a center channel for $550. Condition is about a 5 of 10. Have one frozen 6511 and the tweets went out at very low volume so poly switches will need to be bypassed. Grill cloth needs a little work. Also came with a center that has 4 4.5" drivers??? The back says SDA-SRS but they have the Sl2000 tweets and pin blade connector. Anyone? These should clen up nice and a little work will get them looking good. Guy I got them from buys unclaimed storage units and these were in one. I will post pics for help to identify when my iPhone updates to the latest software.

Are the positive (red) binding post nuts on the right or on the left? Ignore the sticker on the back of the speakers that say that positive is on the right (that only pertains to the original SRS which without a doubt your speakers ARE NOT). You also need to confirm the above by removing the 4 screws on the binding post cup and make sure that positive is on the left and neg is on the right (as you're looking at the binding post cup head on).

The 1.2's can be upgraded to 1.2 TL's with the appropriate changes to the xovers, installing SL3000 or RD-0198 tweeters, etc. There is a thread somewhere on CP that goes into more detail. I'll see if I can find it.

I'd seriously re-evaluate what you want to do with them since you already have 2.3's. Unless they're your life long Polk dream, they sound awful condition wise and will take some serious commitment to get them A+. That's the only condition you should even be thinking about if you keep them. Otherwise, get them up to speed, simply working again and sell them.

The red binding post is on the left and that indeed is the center channel. I'm giving a 5/10 due to the grill cloth. The tops are easy to work so mostly low # due to grill cloth. The poly's should be easy enough to bypass as there is plenty of info on the board. Polk still had them when I had to replace them on my 2.3's a few years back.

I know the 2.3's are awesome but I don't have a snot load of cash invested between both pair. I bought some stuff off of some of the great guys off this board and continue to listen to the advice given to others. I have replaced the poly's in the 2.3 and that gives me the confidence to either bypass the current ones or get a comparable replacement. The tops just need a little wood oil and maybe a #0000 steel wool rub. I do look forward to making these sound great. And advice is definitely appreciated but part of the fun for me with this hobby is fixing up the stuff you find.

If you decide to convert them to 1.2 TL's the tweeter wires should look like this. White is positive and colored wires on the negative.

One thing I learned when I was desktop support way back when was you sometimes had to reseat cables. I pulled the crossover out as I was just going to inspect the poly switches, replaced the frozen 6511, reseated all cables and turned it back on. All drivers are working. I haven't tested volume yet because the daughter chose to sleep right now after work so I will see where the poly's trip later. I saw the mills .5 Ohm resistor on Amazon for $4 and thought about using that in lieu of the poly's. Plus all the ideas of sonicaps looks good to me. I've replaced poly's before but the rest is a beast I don't know if I want to tame.
I'm thinking I can use a razor to get the snags out of the grills? If not, Polk sell original grill cloth or do you just go to a fabric shop and get something off the shelf?

Sure hope this photo thing works. Some pics. Will u/l more when I get tops redone. So the TL upgrade sounds promising+++ but 8 tweets!!! That's almost as much as I paid for the speakers with the center channel!

I have the link for SpeakerWorks. Does the cloth match what's on there or replace it all? I'm guessing all due to age will grey out the black. Plus fabreeze can only get out so much cat!

You could sell the SL2000's for about 20-25 bucks each so the cost is really not much more. It will turn really good speakers into some great ones IMHO.

I'd say you have a really good head start already...550 for the speakers, 200 for the new RD-0198 tweeters (after selling the SL2000's), about 300 for the upgraded caps, spikes are 20 bucks if you get in on this... http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122473...so for about 1100 bucks you'll have a helluva set of speakers to enjoy for years! If you ever decide to sell them you'll get all your money back and then some.

flason, If I were you I would just clean these up and get them in good working order (clean then end cap, replace all the grill cloth, JB Weld the drivers and bypass or replace the polyswitch) and live with them for awhile before deciding if your going to TL them. TL'ing these is no simple task, It's not just replacing a couple caps and the tweeters. There are other guys around here that know a lot more about doing this than me. As far as selling the SL-2000's that might take awhile. Personally I wouldn't TL them if your not going to keep them. Just my $0.02

I helped my friend Jerry convert his 1.2's and it's really not that hard to TL them IMHO.

1. Find someone in the forum to do the xover mod (Ben62670 did Jerry's xovers).

2. Put a wider connector on the negative end of the tweeter wire and change the polarity at the tweeter wire harness using a molex tool.

That's all there is to it. Changing out the tweeters and converting to a wider connector took about 1 hour tops.

So how does that center fare against the CS400? I'm using my 2.3's in a home theater environment with RTA12's in the back. Really good sounding package. The new 1.2's will be handling music now that the Klipschorns are gone.

Yep! Jerry here. :) It was not hard to do. Nothing to it but a little time. Sold the old tweets back to people here on the forum. Love the sound of these speakers now.
