    Default Ridiculously cool idea

So I know just about everyone has something that charges via USB. And sometimes its a PITA to find your adaptor...

Well no need if you use these outlets....

    http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/e81a/#tabs

Probably not the best idea for outlets for your gear, but near a computer desk, in the kitchen (where we charge all our stuff) this would be a silly smart idea...

I believe its a straight drop in replacement, but I could be wrong......

That's a good idea, but $25 for an outlet is pretty steep...

I could think of 3 outlets in my house where this could be handy, but I'm not going to spend $75 on it.

Cut it to $10 an outlet and I'm in.

I'm with you on that, but I predict the price will drop and the Chinese will see the market and offer a $5 outlet

I don't mind paying a little more when the items being plugged into it are worth using better equipment on.

$500.00 dollar phone plugged in via USB to a $5.00 outlet. HMMMMM no thanks.

All of my Leviton outlets were close to this much for GFCI. I think they were about $15.00 a piece.

Cool idea, I'll be ordering several. I'd really rather they raise the price up to $35 and make sure the quality of the parts are top-notch than worry about whether the rest of you cheap-skates can install these in your double-wides

About time these came out- I had them pre-ordered for $15 each about TWO years ago, but they kept getting bumped back until they just canceled all the orders. Was going to pick up 3 at that price, but for $25, I'm only in for one.

I wonder what an electrical inspector would think of these?

It's a nice idea, but I don't have any devcices that charge by usb, except the wife's cell phone, and that has it's own charger. Even if I did, most of the outlets in the rooms we use most are behind something, desk, sofa, etc. Easier to just plug into the computer.

See for me I instantly think of the Kitchen counter where we plug in our phones, Zune, Ipod, etc, and it would perform wonderfully there.

Only problem is as a renter dont really want to install sockets of my own

I'd wait until they come out with one that comes with audiophile-approved hospital-grade electrical outlets ;)

But seriously, the USB electrical outlet is a great idea

For renters, you might want to look into the item EMF-3 on the second page of this PDF:

I would have been really interested, for the kitchen where it seems everything gets charged. However, I got this 2 weeks ago and this takes care of all the charging

    http://www.belkin.com/conserve/valet/

Charges up to 4 devices at a time. Runs a 4 hour charge cycle then shuts off. Senses a new device being added and resets the charge timer.

I wouldn't use any of those outlets in the office as I already have 4 USB hubs in there and could do the charging. Perhaps the guest bedroom could use one.

Keep in mind that any outlets above a kitchen countertop should be GFCI rated and these aren't. If your outlets are tied together they can still be protected i'd just make sure.

What, do you think a cheap outlet wouldn't charge your phone as well or something?

For the love of god, let's please not start believing that higher quality outlets and charger cables have an affect on the longevity of our phones charge...lol

I can see it now...MIT is going to come out with a phone charger cable that costs $3000...with network boxes and all. Their claim will be that the charge lasts twice as long as with your run of the mill junk cables.

I think the concern (and I agree) is that a poorly designed or built AC/USB outlet could fail & result in you charging your $500 phone with 110. If an extra few bucks minimizes that potential then I'm all for it.

Those Leviton GFCI units are just as cheap as a $5.00 basic outlet...

They just have a built in GFCI, the core of it is still the same.
