Monitor 70s - Onkyo TX-NR609 &?

Just ordered the Monitor 70s for front and the Onkyo TX-NR609. I'm sifting thru the forums for ideas but what sub/rear/center would you suggest?

I would like the rears to be as low of profile as possible (but not in wall/ceiling)

Not looking for top of the line ($$) but I do have a little extra to play with. I see alot about 'matching the timber' so I want to make sure that is right...

I've had a couple "boxed" sets of HT equipment and this is my first step into the "real world" so I want to be impressed.

edit to add: 16 guage speaker wire ok? Rears may run 30' (-ish) but front and center less than 10' each.

First, Welcome to Club Polk!

Second here is what I suggest:

Center: CS2

Surrounds: Monitor 30's, OWM3 or OWM5's (Basically surrounds dont need to timbre match just the front 3, so whatever fits your space would work)

Sub: Something in the 350-500 dollar range. If looking from Polk PSW505 or DSW line sub, nothing else. Other brands to look at: Outlaw, Epik, SVS, HSU, Elemental Designs

Also as a suggestion since your Onkyo has pre-outs, eventually look at getting a 3 amp for your front 3. It isnt something you have to do right away, but its the next step in your upgrade path. Lots of members here sell their used amps for decent prices so be on the lookout

Actually the 609 does not have pre-outs. One has to get at least a 708/709 to get them.

If you're not dieing to get things up and running I would return the 609 and step up to at least the 709 for pre-outs. You'll be happier in the long run if/when you add an external amp.

I stand corrected. Onkyo changed their series names from TX-SR to NR .

So you want the lowest end model with pre-outs as stated above. It will make life better later on. Its the one decision I am happy I made early on.

^^^what they said. Those monitor 70's are not going to perform to their full potential from just the receiver. If you can return the 609 i would, and look for 700 and up series they all have preouts. I would definitely get some thicker speaker wire also. Good luck.

It all started with the Polk PSW 505 for me, it's an absolute BEAST for the price. Amazon has it for 249.99. I was so happy with it, I bought the Monitor 70's also... and am thrilled I did. For the center I would agree on the CS2. New Egg has the CS2 Series 2 for 99.99 in Cherry, and 109.99 in Black. They are made to match the Monitor Speakers. I bought the CS20 because I could get it quicker, but it's basically the same speaker. I have been very happy with it. One note though, both the CS2 and CS20 are freakin H-U-G-E !!!! Make sure you have enough room for it wherever your going to place it. I am probably going to get a set of Polk OWM 5's to replace my rear surrounds, so that's my suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestions. I was looking at the OWM5's and the CS2 already so glad to know I was on the right track. And the sub... I hadn't looked at 505 but will go with it.

Good info on the receiver... hate to wait but may return it and get the 709. Especially if the 70's aren't going to live up to their potential on the 609 alone.

That is highly suggested. With that said, Accessories4less.com carries manufacture refurbished Onkyo's. They are an authorized reseller and they come with a 1 year manufature warranty.

Absolutely, I too had considered the 607 in the beginning and even considered the 707 but finally settled on the 807. Even then I wanted more power and got an amp to run my 70's, sure glad I did.

One other note, Costco.com has the Pioneer SC-35 new for 749. smoking deal for a 140watt receiver.
