Flagship SRT question

Guess there would be a few owners on this forum...

Ran into a 5.2 set of these once flagship speakers...they're about 10 yrs old, look fine on the outside and sound truly amazing but i've never been looking in this league before...so am guessing everything in this league sounds amazing to me...

Center is just unbelievable...the rears were quite small in comparison but still

Haven't been able to hear the 2 subs yet as they were not hooked up...

the guy is asking a little more than 3K USD, obviously i could buy new speakers for 3K but they would surely not be as good as these but they are 10 yrs old!

How does that work with this type of speakers is that still worth the jump?

Also curious what to hook these up to, thinking Onkyo 3008 or Denon 4311 to start, would that be sufficient? And at some point budget permitting move to an external amp, perhaps bi-amp the fronts

any thoughts?

I've never heard the SRT's so can't comment. I will comment on the Onkyo 3008, as I just had one and it had some problems, as a lot of them are. I'd take the Denon 4311, especially as a preamp due to the fact it's more reliable and you can put it in preamp mode and bypass the internal amps. I'd be fine for a start but you'd notice a pretty big difference by adding an external amp.

For 3K, I personnally would want to hear those subs and all playing with a demo.

Welcome to CP!

You can get a nice external 5-channel amp for 500-1000 on the used market, and it will totally be worth it with those speakers. You don't want to go to all the trouble of locating and paying for a great set of speakers just to bail at the last minute by underpowering them. It's actually more value-oriented to get a nice a external amp because it lets you get your money's worth out of the speakers.

Ed is our resident SRT expert. I have heard Ed's SRT's and was very impressed. I think he has parts of two or three sets.

I realize 3K is a lot for 2nd hand speaker but these things were once 10K + and sound like nothing i've ever heard before...definitely need to hear those subs otherwise it's a no go.

Another question regarding the SRT control center, since you are kind of obliged to use it....is there still a benefit to Audyssey XT32 in combo with this control center or will that screw each other up?

If that's the case i suppose a cheaper receiver like a 3312 or 808/708 would do in combo with a 5 channel external amp...

See most people opt for the tower configuration stacking the left and right mains on top of the subs but can you also hide the subs in corners or does that give too much trouble with the cabling?
