Polk Audio Rti4

Hello,


I currently have Polk Audio rti4 speakers hooked up to a YAMAHA HTR-5920 Receiver. I mainly use these speakers to listen to music, all kinda music (POP, ROCK, Classical, etc)


I've been wondering if upgrading the receiver would improve sound quality?



Also, I don't know how relevant it is to this forum, but, I have the receiver connected to my desktop's soundcard using this type of wire:

So I was also wondering if having this kind of setup would have any negative affect on the sound quality?


(Not that I am having any problems with the sound right now, I am just looking for ways to improve it. I am not an expert in those things, so I can't really tell if the way my speakers sound right now is good enough, I only know that it's not bad.)

So any advice would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

I've always read that Yamaha + Polk RTI speakers = overly bright sound. If you want a good match for music you should go with a 2 channel Harman Kardon receiver

Alittle more info is needed here. Do you plan on just using it for 2 channel, or do you think you will also go for surround sound in the future ? Do you have a budget ? A seperate pre amp+ amp combo for 2 channel is the way to go. Also, for music from a computer, without an outboard dac, your spinning your wheels to get good sound just piped into a receiver. Just sayin' is all, you may be happy with it, i dunno.

I personally didn't like the sound of my Rti's with my Yamaha rxv-1800 for music, but it sounded good for HT. I think you can always improve sound though

I strongly 2nd, that, i use a H/K, for my 2 channel, clean, accurate and warm sound,

So you have a H-K and a yammie? You haven't tried the H-K yet?

Get with it and do your own test.

Your current avr seems to be an 'entry' level - not that means it is 'bad', but yeah, you probably could get better sound out of your RTi4s with a better AVR.

Not to poo-poo what others have said, but not all Yamaha AVRs are 'bright'. I actually started with RTi4s and a Yamaha RX-V1800 and I wouldn't characterize it as bright - even the reviews of this particular unit were characterized as 'warm'. I can't speak to the other Yamaha avrs, maybe they are 'bright' compared to other brands or models.

Other opinions may vary - all good - that's what makes first hand ears on experience a must in this hobby.

Maybe 'bright' is a personal preference and is not a bad thing - depends on what you like to listen to and how.

Anyhoo....yes - everything matters - a better AVR would be a sonic step up.

Maybe consider a Marantz SR6005/6 - might be a good match for the RTi4s - and you could then decide to upgrade your speakers later, or add an external amp.

Sure - Marantz makes current AVRs - some have gotten some vg reviews.
