    Default Dedicated CD Players

My old CD player bit the dust. So I am in market for a new CD player, but I remember my upscaling DVD player is able to plays CD's.
Is there an advantage to a dedicated CD player?
Is the SQ dictated more by the CD player or by the receiver/amp?
Or would I kill to birds if I upgrade both with a blueray player?

A dedicated piece is usually always better than one trying to do multiple things. The final sound you get depends on everything in the chain, down to the wires and the room itself. Not too many bdp players out there that can top a dedicated cdp for SQ. Not cheap ones anyway.

What kind of budget are you looking at? I agree a dedicated cdp will normally beat a all in one but then again a more expensive all in one like an esoteric or krell will do great in 2 channel but come at a high price. The source is important in the chain. Normally you can get some good dacs in cdp that will be better than your avr. You could also get a blue ray player and also a nice dac and use the blu ray as a transport. IMO that would be a good choice.

Oppo makes a good all in one unit but again might be more than what your looking for so budget does play a factor.

    Damn straight!

Everything matters. That said, using a great CDP with an AVR is a waste of a great CDP.

I understand that everything is important, but nothing else is going to change. My avr is being used as a pre amp which is driven by a parasound 1500.
What do you all think about pioneer elites cdp. They can be had for cheap. I don't want to spend 500 -1000 in a cdp

Get yourself the OPPO 93. It does every CD format well at a good price.

Some Pioneer Elites would be fine as a CDP in your price range. You could also find a used Pioneer Elite DVD/CD/SACD that would work reasonably well for less.

    Another option is a mid-level CDP like a Marantz CD5004, about 349--new.

Take a look at the Stereophile review:

If I were on a 'budget', I might consider this.

    Good Luck!

The 5004 has just been discontinued to make room for the, drum roll please....the 6004. Really. So keep your eyes out for sale prices on the 5004.

You may also want to check out the dedicated single-disc CD players from Yamaha and Onkyo.

Pioneer also just announced new Blu-ray players, including Elite models, that can do CD (and SACD).
