    Default Disconnected tonearm wire... poop

I just bought a Pro-Ject Essential off the 'Gon from a pretty reputable dealer. The packaging was perfect. All things were included. Unfortunately, one of the tonearm wires was severed. The other end is "up in the tonearm" - so to speak. Anyone familiar enough with this unit (or possibly the Debut) to offer any suggestions as to what I might be able to do. Yes... technically the seller is responsible, but I trust he did not do anything wrong and this is just an unfortunate event for all concerned. Just looking for the path of least resistance and a working turntable.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

The seller should be consulted and informed of the situation. They are, under 'Gon policy, responsible for the deliver of the unit to you in "as described" condition. If the wire is cut short (which your description indicates) a rewire of the tonearm would be the correct solution. The quest arises who will do it? Do you have a local shop that you could get a quote from? This would be information to have for the discussion with the seller. Possibly you would agree to split the cost or he would pay for the repair. Worst case scenario return the table for a refund or for him to repair and return to you.

That's the way it could be heading - just hate seeing either party have to deal with this. I guess chalk it up to the inherent dangers of shipping a turntable with a connected tonearm. Too many horror stories out there. Plus, there's no way I can see UPS honoring an insurance claim on this one. I've already decided that the any repair should in no way be attempted by me. He's requested some pics, which I'll send to him tomorrow. And we'll go from there and keep you posted. Thanks for your concern.

I actually know a guy who has the skills and tools to make this sort of repair - if never having had worked on rewiring a tonearm. What kind of information should I give him to help him out?

Check the Vinyl Engine website or other sites that have analog or vinyl sections to see if there has been any descriptions of rewiring you specific arm. Usually you can get a rewire kit and you have to gently pull the wires through the arm. The tricky part is how you deal with the base to arm transition/pivot area on the rewire. You do not want to cause any issues with the bearings or free movement of the arm.

I haven't shipped electronics by UPS in a long time (years). I recall at least three instances where I shipped or received an electronic item with hidden damage. There was a checkbox on the claim form for hidden damage and I didn't have any problem getting the claim settled once I obtained a repair estimate and provided a detailed explanation of the damage.

I did not know that, but thanks for the head's up if something like this should ever happen again. Anyway... the seller was completely awesome salsa about the whole ordeal and just sent me a brand new unit minus a couple of extra ducets on my end and about $12 shipping.

If you're curious, the seller was Decibelaudio on Audiogon and they absolutely did nothing but provide top-notch customer service in every facet of this transaction. So there...
