    Default Speaker Thoughts

I have just finished setting up my new VM series setup. I have 4 VM 30's for front and rear channels, a VM 20 for the center channel, and a Velodyne Optimum 12. I am powering the speakers with a Yamaha RX-V663 receiver conditioned by a Monster 3600.

Any comments or thoughts? Should I add 2 more VM 30's to get 7.1?

Hi, You have very expensive speakers and a Yamaha that supposed to 95WPC. It is in stereo, but as you add speakers, the power drops in this model. In the configuration your running right now the Yamaha is producing between 60 to 74 WPC. Shocker I know, but we've all been there. When you use this Yamaha in 7.1 the power drops to 46.9 WPC. Even though I don't know the size of your room or listening habits I do know that you have $2K speakers. You might want to consider a better receiver or seperates before adding another pair of speakers cause if you clip the amp, it could fry your speakers.
I'm sure you'll get better advice on what to buy from other Polkies here but here is a link so you can read up on your model and be sure to view the last page as it has the lab measurements they ran.

The good thing about this Yamaha is that you have pre-outs and can add a quality amp to run those speakers and use the yammie as a pre amp.

The VM 30 is 90db/w sensitive so your receiver should be more than powerful enough to achieve ear shattering SPLs. The 5.1 vs 7.1 debate really comes down to room size and layout. If you are using the HT in a small room, say a spare bedroom, you will have a hard time seeing the benefit of 7.1 (not to mention a hard time fitting 7 speakers and a sub in). If you are using a larger room, with space behind the seating position to have the surround and surround back speakers at least a few feet from the listener, then it would make more sense

Great set-up though, I bet that sounds awesome. The speakers are very stylish too, if they sound half as good as they look you should be very happy

Heck, if my speakers had thoughts, they'd probably say " Hey asshat, get me some better friends to play with. "
