Black Friday week at Amazon

Well, it used to be you waited for Black Friday and they'd have a dozen or so deep discounted blu-rays that day or throughout the week each day. In just the past 12 hours, they released around 50 pages of discounts referenced from blu-ray.com. Lot's of stuff around 10 bucks for old titles and even newer stuff is at a good price. If this keeps up thoughout the week, there should be plenty of nice finds for those interested in blu-ray. Not sure what's the best way to sort through them all, though. As many price drops aren't even listed as black friday deals on the Amazon site. Maybe use blu-ray.com for most popular deals and see what comes up throughout the week.

I dunno, Transformers DOTM for $14.99 or the Jurassic Park Trilogy for $29.99 seem like pretty good prices to me. It's just that they're buried in the flood of discounted titles coming out listed on blu-ray.com. Lots of stuff in there for patient people willing to look for bargains.

So I guess the best way to find good deals for Amazon Blu Rays is through a third party site. It seems silly, but yeah there are some good deals to be had.

3D doesn't seem to be making much of a push this year. Not good since this would seem like the time for the format to come in to its own. Not sure what Amazon will offer this week. But in the past, I've scored some good deals on Disney 3D. As a new release lists for pre-orders, it often comes with a $5-10 discount on the 3D combo pack. Then, on release day, the price drops to price match big box retailers, maybe down to $24.99 or so. But the original discount is on top of that. So the 3D combo pack is often equal to or less than the 2D combo pack. That's why I own a bunch of 3D titles without even owning the format yet.

The previous low was around 70 bucks. So yes, extended LOTR for $49.99 is good. The wild card is whether the box set will be a "door buster" for black friday and go even lower.

You are correct, though, that the theatrical versions are even cheaper. Amazon has them individually for around 12 bucks each. And at this point, why fight the crowd at Best Buy when you can get the Extended Edition Trilogy now from Amazon tax free at $49.99.

I just went back and looked at the add again and you are correct, it is the extended versions. I think my eyes are getting bad. That is a great deal.

I also saw Beauty and the Beast - I believe 11.99 - Disney blu-ray's are NEVER that cheap. Great deal - I paid like 25 for mine, and it was not when it first came out.

Why people want MORE of LOTR is beyond me. I'll admit I'm not a fan, just hard to imagine that the movies aren't long enough as it is...

Making the complex books into a trilogy of movies, a lot of the story had to be changed or cut for the theatrical releases. LOTR is one of the few movies, IMO, where the restored scenes actually improve the story and do not detract from it. But of course if you didn't like the theatrical versions, it's hard to imagine you'd want more of the same.

In the extended version, the first movie has been re-mastered. It has much better video quality than the original release. For a fan of the trilogy like myself, that makes it worthwhile. I paid $57.00 when it was first released. Not much money really.

When you watch the extended version, the storyline flows smoothly. The theatrical release shows signs of editing, and at times, heavily. I prefer the extended although I do understand the runtime is quite challenging. As much as I enjoy them, I just have no interest in seeing them again, so my BR collection is missing what is quite arguably the greatest fantasy series to hit the big screen. Maybe in 5-10 years I'll watch them again when they come out with the 3-D, Super-Ubber-Extended Edition, in 2160P, with additional nude shots of Arwen's ears, boxset, ear prosthetic included.

LOL Yeah...in 10 years Peter Jackson will shoot Tom Bombadil and Glorfindel footage and add them in. People will flock to get these new editions and proceed to sit through three 5 1/2 hour movies. lol.

2 has its haters. Personally, I think all 3 are worth watching, but 1 is definitely the best of the three. Still, the lossless 7.1 on these discs are all demo-quality, so I highly recommend them.

Besides, I don't think they're selling the movies separately anyway, so if you want one, you gotta buy 'em all.

In most cases of extended editions, I would agree... but everything that was put back into LOTR is meat and not fat. The extended editions really are the best way to see the movie, and they put back in whole side plots that were just left dangling in the theatrical releases. The only other flick I would say that about is Watchmen, the Ultimate Cut of which is definitely the preferred version.

BTW: A friendly reminder on how to get the most out of Amazon's Blu-ray sales this week. Go to www.blu-ray.com and sign up for a free account. Any movie you're looking to buy, pull it up on there and it will show the price history. Set a reasonable price threshold based on Amazon's lowest historical price and when Amazon's price drops near that point, the site will e-mail you a notification. Great way to stalk Amazon's Black Friday deals without having to pay too much attention (and if you get e-mail on your smartphone, even better). I just got Gran Torino for $4.99 that way.

I almost bought The Dark Knight and Batman Begins....Then I remembered that the third movie is coming out next year (I think).

I decided to hold off and see if they will be offered as a set next Chrismtas (Aren't I patient?)

Does this sound like a good decision?

I'm not that patient. Got The Dark Knight Blueray for 8 bucks. Also Alien's is better in extended version IMO. Mr. Bezos gets richer every day.

I probably wouldn't be so patient except for two reasons. I am so busy that it is hard for me to keep up with my movie watching as it is.

Also I don't have my own place yet. I'm thinking I will find something after Christmas...Hopefully by Spring. As it is, I watch on my roomate's Samsung plasma (I bought it for him in trade for a few months rent). He doesn't like change, and I've never convinced him to let me hook up some speakers...I have the Polk SRT's!
So I watch on the Samsung with ONLY the sound coming from the TV, so I don't get the full blu ray effect.
I can be patient and wait until I get my own place, hookup my equipment, THEN I will definitely start agressively buying titles I've been kinda waitin' on.
