I can honestly say I was very shocked at how good they sounded with the stock tubes but after awhile they seem a little harsh but was still shocked..

Did you snag the Brimar rectifier I linked you to? I've been running the Siemens ECC801S, I won from snow recently and love 'em. The Sylvania GB 6201 and GB 5965 are among my faves also. I've massed others and have quite a stash now since I first began. Tubes=Crack for audio.

Where did you order it from?

I'm looking at new preamps and tubes are something I have strongly desired to get into.

Let me second this. If its the one Mike recommended from the UK it was here in less than a week for $27 clams shipping included. A very good deal indeed, I may order a second as backup.

Does this mean I get to play with the BIG RED BUTTON now, Tony?

Seriously, try the Mullard GZ30 as well. It's a straight glass tube and not as cool aesthetically as the Brimar, but a nice sounding tube, nonetheless. James has the best price on these anywhere that I've looked also.

    I kind of like mine.

Why are we looking to reduce a subjective experience to objective criteria anyway? The subtleties of music and audio reproduction are for those who appreciate it. Are you guys using a DAC in the chain between the source and Dared or does that have a negative effect on the tube sound?

Bill Evans was here today. Received the Dared this afternoon. Warmed it up, then Bill and Paul are suddenly in my family room playin Debbie's Waltz. Unbelievable. That drum kit was in my daggum room. Vanguard bliss. Hard to believe it'll get significantly better.

Thanks to H9 and the rest of you guys for the excellent info. I'm a few steps closer now.

Off to do some shoppin. Cheers!

Sorry for the obvious thread de-rail here but............

Mike - I have a few friends that are one off prototyping guys, if I were to approach them about making a ceremonial "BIG RED BUTTON" mock up what features would you like to see ? It may not actually do anything but you would at least be one step closer.

Perhaps we can include one of those model volcanoes that we tried to build in 8th grade science class.

That was just baking soda and vinegar. C'mon! Something that can at least take off a finger.
