    Default Marantz/Carver/Polk

Long time listener, first time caller.

Anyway, I am considering the purchase of the Marantz 6005 and am wondering how it may pair up with my Carver TFM-45 and my Polk Monitor 70's. I also have the CS1 center and some little Infinity surrounds and that currently runs through, sans the Carver, An older Onkyo (no pre-outs). Or if an alternative may come to mind, please don't hesitate. Typical use would be a 50/50 split between music/movies. Thanks for your time.

Kind of confused here. A Carver TFM-45 will drive M70's beautifully, to eardrum explosion levels, but if you have no pre-outs, how do you run it? I'm not personally acquainted with any Marantz avrs, but some speak highly of them. I will say that the CS-2 center will match better with the M70, if you can swing the size.

I can't currently run the Carver. It is sitting right here next to me, feeling neglected, ready for action. I bought it from the BIL knowing I would not be able to fire it up until the receiver was upgraded.

OK then... What is your budget for the avr? Do you like the Marantz for any particular reason? Any decent avr should be able to drive a center channel and surrounds pretty well for most anything. What you need to keep in mind is that for movies//tv the center is the most important channel. My Onkyo is rated 135wpc x7, but I don't think it would push much more than 80-90wpc driving 5 channels.
The Carver will serve you well for the M70s, but keep an eye on the meters so you don't blow them up.

By the way....Welcome to Cub Polk

I have not found much in the way of negative feedback on the 6005, It's in my price range(my better half doesn't know that yet), looks like it will do what I need it to do and then some and it looks pretty darn sweet. But, If there is something that would go with my gear better in the same price range(500-600) I would certainly give a look see. Oh ya... the Marantz also comes w/3 year warranty.

I have the SR5005 that I basically use as a pre/pro with my Parasound HCA 2205AT and I am extremely happy with it. I liked the smoother sound of the Marantz over the Pioneer Elites, Denons and Yamahas that I heard. Oh, and welcome to Club Polk!

I tried out the 6005 before I settled on my NAD. I thought the Marantz sounded great, had a huge number of features, and of course the 3-year warranty is nice. At $500 - $600 new there are a few good choices but the Marantz would certainly be one of them. I definitely agree with breal74 that the sound of the Marantz is smoother than some of the other choices (subjective opinion).

Just curious Marty913, what swayed your decision to go with the NAD? Better sounding(subjective of course) or better features?

I'm not really a "feature" type guy. I just pass through or bypass video processing and use a music server for streaming so the features weren't needed. I wanted the right sound and a good match for my Carver amp. I owned NAD back in the 80's and in fact powered my 2.3TL's with NAD (wife let the speakers go, I let the wife go). I was definitely looking for "that sound". I tried quite a few receivers as pre-pros and it came down to the NAD and Marantz. The Anthem MRX-300 wasn't out yet but it would have definitely made the list also. It also helped that NAD was replacing the T747 and the price was less than half of MSRP.

Send all Carver gear that is feeling depressed or neglected my way!

I love those meters on the front. There is a coupler that Carver sold that will let you run the amp with your current receiver, but I don't remember what it was called. I would however suggest getting a better receiver if you can.
