Default Polk db6501 v. Infinity Kappa Perfect 6.1

It appears I have blown either the woofer in my front db6501 or another crossover . I am taking it to the audio shop tomorrow morning for them to take a look at.

If its just the woofer I have another set of db6501?s in my passenger doors not currently connected I will simply steal the woofer from. If its the crossover though I might be out of luck. One of my rear crossovers is blown already (hence why they are not hooked up) and I am not sure about the other one.

As a result I am curious to hear what your thoughts are on the Infinity Kappa Perfect series components. Their spec?s are quite different than the 6501?s as they only go down to 75hz (which is fine as I have a dedicated sub) rather than the 40hz of the 6501?s.

They would cost me about 200 bucks to purchase and get installed. Any more than that will be a impossible sell to the wife (even the 200 might be that way).

I should mention these will be run off a Sundown Audio 125.2 amplifier that will generate 125x2 @ 4 ohm and 200x2 @ 2 ohm so power isnt a problem as I will have to drop the gain on the amp down anyway you look at it.

Look forward to any impressions on that series as I have never heard them, only the Reference series speakers and even then not the components.

P.S. I would love a set of SR's but at 200 bucks that isnt going to happen as they are worth WAY more than that.

LOL.... I dream of SR's skip..... you know that...... I am hoping its just the woofer so I dont need to replace anything. I am trying to hold out till bonus time when I might be able to bump that 200 dollars to something I shoot you via PM

P.S. I remember where the SR's are buried

And, they are worth dreaming about! The only way I would ever give up my SR5250's, would be if I was able to get my hands on some SR6500's.

True, but 6500's are too deep for many cars (my Jetta included) whereas the 5250's should fit in just about any car. Plus if you have a dedicated sub your cutting off most of the low end you gain with the 6500's anyway

Anyone have comments on the Infinity's?

Yeah, I would be using an MDF spacer with the SR6500's if I got a pair for my car. I already had to do that with my prior pair of 6.5" Focals before I switched to the Polks. I do use a dedicated sub, but the SR6500 would allow me to have a lower cutoff. Specifically, I have them set to an 80hz crossover point with -24db slope. The speakers can actually handle a 60hz cutoff, but they can be driven to the point of over-excursion quite easily on some songs. This means I either up the crossover point or turn down my music; I opted to up the crossover. However, at that crossover point, I can still pinpoint some bass frequencies that come from the sub in the back. Yes, it is nitpicking, but it bothers me sometimes. So, if I get the SR6500, I should be able to bring the crossover point back down.

Find me some SR6500's, and I'll hook you up with a great deal on some SR5250's.

EDIT: Sorry, but I don't have any comments on the Infinity's. I've only dealt with their lower-end models, but I did think they were pretty good for the money.

Yeah, I have space for a spacer (since I would need one anyway as my fronts are 6 1/2's) but the 6500's are just too much beast for me. I would never truly use them to their fullest since I plan to always run dedicated subs to handle most of the low stuff.

Right now my fronts are set to I think 120hz (my HU is VERY limited) but I would prefer to drop em to 100 or even 80.

Well I went to the shop and found out the following:

The spider on the db6501 got wet and it corroded the voice coil on the speaker. We took the passenger rear and replaced the bad driver with it. Its ONLY a partial fix since the water still will get on the new speaker. So I bought some speaker baffles off Crutchfield. When they come in I will be installing them in both front doors myself.

I plan to chop the bottom part of it off so that the speaker can breathe since I believe not cutting part out will kill the midbass of the speaker.

    What do you guys think?

Yeah, that ain't good. The subwoofer will never integrate well at that crossover point. I can see why you're OK with the DB's if you have them cut off there w/ no real option. The DB's are nice, but they lack the punch of the bigger boys. You'd never know it if they never run lower than 120 though.

I set em to 80 abut ago and they sound better. Looking at possibly getting the sr sub on polks eBay site....

I like the idea of getting a better HU but there doesn't seem to be a ton of stuff out there thats got decent tuning with an aux or iPod hookup. The x995 is discontinued and not really seeing anything else interesting besides the pioneer p80 but that's not even out yet.

Ender what's your current head unit? Sounds weird to me that you can't set the xover lower than 120hz. Not doubting it, really... but still weird, since i've got 4 headunits in my cars, only one of them halfway decent, and they'll all go down to at least 80, most of them 60 or lower i think.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

    KDC-MP438U: It has the following: 80, 100, 120, 150, 180.

I have it set by 80hz right now.

    Default db6501

I have run 4 of these in my current system. Running on a PG Xenon 100.4, being as these speakers are 100rms you would think this would be a great setup. I ran through all 4 of the mids. All 4, took me some 2 years+ to do it but the last one died yesterday. The crossovers and tweeters still works but all the mids failed the same way. All the mids will still work if pressure is slightly applied to the cone. I never ran the gain more than 1/8 high and set the crossovers on the amp @ 100hrz. I have been doing this awhile and would like to believe I know what I am doing. I am severely disappointed in this line and this makes me questions quality control. Seems to me the braiding came undone internally on each speaker resulting in weak sound, sparatic playability and eventual failure. I can see why polk replaced the line with the dxi6500. I recently picked up a set to install and replace some blown mids. I see the quality is exactly the same. I do not think a thing was done to better the design than to re badge. I own alot of polk audio products as I like the quality and value. This line just disappointed me and I don't I will be back for more.

So I found a SR124 DVC that was built in a box based on Polks spec's and am hoping to possibly do a straight trade for what I currently have.

Hoping to get all this done today

Yeah the X994 and X995 were on my list to purchase, but are now discontinued. I am probably going to get the Pioneer P80 linked to in another thread.

Oh i didn't know they were discontinued... bummer. :(

The P80 looks kinda cool, giving thought to putting it in the MX6 that i STILL haven't put a stereo in, 2 years later.

Yeah, the X995 was just discontinued . And besides that Headunit (and the P80) there isnt much out there that has decent EQ for a decent price.

And if it does its ugly as a dog as well

I bet my X994 is rather "wasted" in the Miata. I don't run a sub, just a pair of 8" Clearwater components.

One thing the P80 has that I like over the Kenwoods is the ability to go active and use the headunit itself to power the tweets, and an amp for the woofer section of the components. DSkip is doing this and it very much interests me since I am running components up front and not using my rears currently.

It would let me tweak everything from the HU and really dial everything in with Time Alignment since the tweets are at ear level while the woofers are down in the door.

That and the P80 works with an Ipod/aux input wherase the older P880 does not.
