Receiver Suggestions

Hello! New member looking for some insight! I am setting up my home theater system and have the following in place in a 13w x 20L drywalled room (basement/no windows) tile floor:

2- Monitor 50's -Fronts
2- RC60i's -Rears
1- CS 1 II -Center

Plan to buy:
1- PSW10 -

I'm looking for suggestions for the best "bang for the buck" when it comes to powering it all. I'd like to keep the price of the receiver proportional to the speaker investment. Can anyone suggest something that will work well with these while keeping the price "reasonable for the speakers"?

I am not an audio expert, but I have recently bought a Denon 1912, 7.1 and I am very happy with the way it sounds. I use it with Tsi400 (Just a sterio steup), no sub-woofer, it still sounds fantastic in my relatively huge living room. Also it allows you to bi-amp the front speakers, which significantly improves the sound quality.

Are you looking to upgrade speakers in the future?It is nice to have a receiver with pre-outs if you do plan on upgrading and adding more power.Plus look in to the CS2.

At this point, probably no upgrade for several years (I say that now...) but just looking to complete this system and get busy enjoying it!

Delaney, welcome to Club Polk. My suggestion for a receiver in an appropriate price category is the excellent Onkyo 709 factory refurb(which should be at least as reliable as a brand-new unit)available from A4L here for about $480.

^+1,thats a graet choice,and a great place to buy! And it has pre-outs for future-proofing! Nice receiver,and best bank for the buck,as far as i'm concerned!

That looks like a great option, I'm a little weary about buying refurb electronics. Does anyone have any comments either way about that?

Get a Fair Trade or equivalent extended warrany, cheap enough insurance.

Those are very simple speakers to drive (not hard on a receiver). I would budget as low as you can on any receiver with pre-outs (in case of future upgraditis - it comes on without warning sometimes, and there's no use trying to reason with it!), and spend the extra cash on a significantly better subwoofer if home theater is a priority.

Refurbished or open box is a great way to go in my opinion. Usually, they are in very good condition ... very frequently "like new", but it IS possible that there may be some light blemishes if you're not lucky, so you'd still have to be willing to live with that at whatever price point you decide on. There are things I will accept on a receiver I paid $200 for that I will absolutely not accept on a receiver I paid $500 for.

Be aware that Onkyo can sound a tad "bright". To some, that's more "natural", but not to everyone. Another neutral, but "warmer" option is harman/kardon, who sell direct on eBay from their own store. They have lots of happy customers there.

Otherwise, local listings on craigslist.org can be a source of amazing deals, if you know what you are doing (can identify a problem seller or problem component within ten minutes) and don't mind the extra hassle.

Welcome to the Forum and I see you have been getting very good input. Don't be too afraid of used or re-furb gear as with electronics if it is going to burn up it will usually do so within the first 100 hours and re-furbs from Onkyo will come with a full one year warranty. I just bought a txnr 708 last fall and am listening to it now and of all things it is all alone powering some mighty SDA-SRS with a pair of RT2000P's for a little 4 channel delight.
Now, as you watch this forum you will see used gear come up for sale all the time. It will be better than the average craigs list or ebay in quality. People swap out stuff all the time. Starting out with those Monitors you can power them up with almost any mid to entry grade receiver. You are likely wanting HDMI and a music enhancer or usb/network connection which will be associated with newer gear. Lots of the older flagship receivers are being sold now as their owners want all of the latest hook-ups which make the old flagships a real steal...but just analog hook-ups. Keep in mind that where it comes from and how it was used is more important than the bells and whistles.

Save you money for a better sub you will be glad you did. the psw10 really isnt a good sub not even for the money. You might want to check out the DSW line now those are a good bang for your buck.
