Power conditioner

So I'm reading some older posts lately on power conditioners and decided it is something i should invest in. I'm useing a $60.00 surge protecter plus a ligthing protecter on the main electrical panel (hmmmm the thougth just occured to me does one make the other reduntent will have to look into that) So checkeing around town and the only ones we have here are monster brand at around $500. So my question is ........what are some of the brands you folks use?

APC H15, most of the Panamax models are good as well. The Belkin is a solid choice.

My path down the power conditioning rabbit hole started with a single used PS Audio Soloist that I purchased off of Audiogon for under $100. I installed the soloist. I then plugged my preamp and CD player into it using the stock power cords. The improvement that it made to the sound quality was by no means subtle.

This started me on a bit of a power conditioning quest (addiction). Two months later I was in pretty deep. I had purchased three PS Audio Soloist SE's, six PS Audio AC-12 power cables and a PS Audio P10 Power Regenerator. I have yet to regret purchasing a single piece.

Back to the Soloist. The soloists are no longer being offered (by PS Audio Anyway). You can find used examples that pop up from time to time on Ebay,Audiogon and Craigslist (I use Allofcraigs.com). Try to avoid Ebay. These things are getting bid up to almost their list price (Does that tell you anything?). A Soloist SE is preferable to the standard Soloist. It has an upgraded power outlet.

As far as finding a new Soloist? Ethereal is selling what appears to be the Soloist and they are calling it the ESO-1 Super Outlet. I have not inspected one of these units so I cant guarantee that they are built the same as the Soloist. But, as I understand, PS Audio is manufacturing these for Ethereal. The price of these units is all over the board. The asking price on the internet is anywhere from the list price of $300 all the way down to $50.

I use a Furman Elite-15 PF i, and it's worked great for my application.

There's a difference between consumer based PC and hi-fi pc. The hi-fi ones I like to call them can run some bucks. Running Springs, Shuyata, BPT, all have different lines of PC for any HI-FI system. Consumer grade ones, the Belkins, Monsters, Furmans, are for the most part, MOV based which means a lightning strike close by and those units are toast. So spending alot of coin on one is suspect for me anyway. Other units like PS Audio have a different set up that have parts that are replaceable without having to trash the whole thing.

The average system in the average home probably needs nothing more than a Belkin, or along those lines. Just my .02

For me, the Panamax because of its filtering especially with coax helped me out a lot. I had a slight buz in my small system before I got one and found out it was the cable box / coax. Since then I got a 2nd one on my main system and to me, it seem to clean up the sound. Now it could be because I live in a townhome complex and my power is the cleanest or because my breaker box is from 1970 but, since putting a Panamax on both systems, it has helped in my situation.

Besides, since i am running a sunfire amp and there is no on off switch, the unit will turn the preamp on 1st, then the amp, and when turning it off, it will turn the amp off first, then the pre helps me out a lot. I keep my amp on all weekend when i do the most listening but during the week, i turn it off.


For my DJ rig, I use a furman. I was running a karaoke show on generator power when the generator spiked and took my rcf powered speakers, mixer, and wireless mic receivers out with it! I called the Furman company since the manual on the unit I have said it has a warranty against lighting, spikes and such. ( Furman PL Plus dmc) When I called Furman support about it I got a lesson on how electrical current works. They said when a big spike happens, the Furman basically pops itself inside but, the electric still needs to go somewhere to get out of the line. The power supplies didn?t blow on my board, or powered speakers or Shure?s so the Furman did its job. What happened was the power basically ?jumped? or shot through the XLR?s! and the inputs on the board all blew out, the input on the amps inside the speakers blew out, and same with the Shure.


Just thought I would share my lesson on spikes with you.

Thanks folks for your recommendations and opinions on power conditioners.
I will do some research on these models and figure out which one to buy.

I have been using a Monster 2500 for awhile and have been happy with it - built like a tank.
Soon I am trying out a new (to me) Panamax.
