We're going to see it in IMAX 3D this weekend. I read these books while a teenager (perfect timing for pulp fiction) and loved them. They were dated then, but seeing it done as it should be will be a treat. Unfortunately, the demo (18-25) have no idea who the character is...so it's going to have to be a word of mouth groundswell for us to get the 2 sequels.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO

I have not been to seen John Carter yet. Like some of you up thread I have read the Barsoom series in fact I just about have the 10 volume series memorized. I have all 10 of them in first edition copies. The illustrations in these books have been copied to the screen. It looks fantastic. I don't understand why this movie bombed, but I am a huge fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs so I suppose I am not objective. I have all 125 books ERB wrote in his lifetime in first edition copies. As far as I am concerned ERB's magnum opus was his Martian series. ERB invented the ScFi genre of planet building. With the failure of John Carter of Mars, I guess we don't have to worry about seeing the Carson (Napier) of Venus Series.

When me & my Wife see the previews on TV we both laugh. It looks too far fetched. Who the hell is John Carter?!

But after watching the 10 minute preview just now I think I'll go see it. It looks like it could be good.

John Carter is fun, but not without its problems. The introductory voice-over of the movie is completely useless as most of that info is conveyed during the story, and it was a mistake showing Barsoom then going back to Earth. Honestly, the movie should have started where this 10-minute clip did. Also, though there are some big moments, they aren't really punctuated by the score as if this movie was the epic they wanted it to be. Michael Giacchino's worst score thus far, which is a shame. But the movie's biggest crime is that you just don't see the $250 million budget on the screen. This is no Avatar, where you instantly know why it was so expensive. Perhaps it's the familiarity of the way Barsoom looks (basically like any desert on Earth), but the end result is a movie that looks like maybe a $100 million flick. And honestly, if it HAD been a $100 million flick, it would have been considered a huge success.

However, Taylor Kitsch was a good choice for the lead role and Lynn Collins is SO good. So while I really enjoyed it and WILL be buying the Blu-ray, you should temper your expectations... and don't expect to see a sequel.

Bingo!!! You have it this is what happened, and this is what critics said; Who is John Carter? Those of use who are deep into ScFi know about Edgar Rice Burroughs and his ScFi efforts but to most everyone else ERB is Tarzan.

Yeah... changing the name to just John Carter was their biggest misstep with this. The marketing people should be canned. I know Stanton's argument was that he isn't "of Mars" until the end of the movie... but how's that working out for you when your movie flopped so hard?

When I heard Dejah Thoris ask John Carter, "are you from Earth" in one of the trailers I knew there was trouble. The Barsoomians call Earth Jasoom.

Oh, they called it Jasoom in the movie as well. The story itself isn't the problem... They did a good job with that. The problem, in my opinion, is an animation director coming into live action for the first time and not quite getting it right. That said, Brad Bird did the same thing with Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and he didn't have that problem at all.

Hopefully, it will soon go to Bluray so they can start recouping money. It actually got good overall reviews. Of course, there is always some people who will not like a movie, but that is to be expected.

This thread is proving just how "geeky" some of us are. Haven't seen the film. Did look interesting once I got past the same reaction to the trailer that Sal had. Carter, who?

ERB may have written a lot, but most of it is pulp fiction. I do respect any author who has somewhat of a following though. An entire collection of First Editions? That's impressive regardless of what one thinks about ERB.

Just how does one go about compiling such a collection? I will probably catch this when it comes out for the rental market and decide whether or not it's a purchase.

I'm still amazed that so many of you knew what this series was and had actually read some or even most of it. "World Without End!"

The Barsoom series by ERB was great, and so is his Pellucidar series. That could be another great money losing movie.

I enjoyed John Carter a lot. It is definitely a buy for the collection when in come out. It is damn shame it was money loser...because it means the rest of the Barsoom series will probably not make it to the big screen.

Here was my mini review of the movie.

Yeah..I know...the title is just John Carter. But it is based on the first of the "Barsoom" series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. I read these novels years ago and they may have been my entry into the lifelong love of sci-fi novels (or maybe it was Jules Verne - no matter). I think I still have them in my stacks of old books.

What a fun movie. It is overblown, campy, visually impressive and just true enough to the original novels to make it my kind of movie. I'm sure there will be some who don't care for it because it is a CGI fest from start to finish. It cost too much and hasn't done too well at the box office...and that is a shame because now they probably won't make any sequels. I was looking forward to at least "The Gods of Mars" and "The Warlord of Mars" making it to the big screens. I may just go dig out and read the novels and see how they hold up many, many years later.

If you are looking for a couple of hours of classic (ie: old school) sci-fi brought to life with stunning current day CGI, and don't expect more than a cool "popcorn" flick...check it out. I enjoyed it.
