Default Do I want a squeezebox touch???

I just posted in Wanted to buy that I was looking for a squeezebox touch. However I am wondering if that is what I really want or will it do what I want.

I have about 2 TB of flac and mp3 music. I have 5 different sound systems in my house. I would like to be able to playmy flac or mp3 files wirelessly anywhere in my house. Will squeezebox do this??
I got static in my head

The SqueezeBox Touch is a single source, so it's set up to bring digital music to one system. Now if you've got some way to distribute one source to all 5 of your systems that would work, but a single SqueezeBox alone isn't going to do it. You'd need 5 SqueezeBox receivers it you wanted to stick with strictly SqueezeBox. If you've got a game console or a DLNA-enabled A/V receiver in any of those rooms, they could be set up to bring the music to those particular rooms.

Sonos can do that, bring it all to every system, but it's gonna cost some coin. There is no cheaper alternative though if you want to play on multiple systems from one computer source. I cut down my own zones by using a receiver with speaker A and B switching, that way I cover 2 zones with one sonos. At 375 a pop, and 5 systems, it's fairly expensive, but you'll be able to play all zones seperately, with different music, or combine a few or all of them together. They have a free phone app to use as a controller, so your covered there too. You could probably do the same with a SB touch, buy one for every system, don't know how well they let you combine all the zones though so maybe someone else can chime in on that. Those are your 2 options for not that much coin.

I do know that multiple SqueezeBoxs can be synced to play together, but that is not something I have played with myself.

He could also buy multiple spare "dumb" SqueezeBox receivers (like the ones that came with the Duet system) from eBay for fairly cheap, and control them with a single Duet controller or phone apps. That would probably be the route I would go. If you've got 5 systems, I'd assume one of them is your serious listening system--put the Touch on that one. But just to get some sound in the other 4 rooms, the dumb receivers work just fine for that.

I've used Squeezeboxes for a few years now, and their multi-zone and zone synch capabilities are awesome. As stated above, if you need music at all 5 systems at once you will need 5 Squeezebox devices, but once you get used to the convenience I think you'll want 5 devices.

I have a system similar to what Syndil was suggesting above:

I currently run 6 zones - a Touch in my main system, a Classic in my garage, 2 Duet receivers for my outdoor zones, a converted old smartphone (using the squeezeplayer app) for my bedroom, and my sixth is on my actual phone - configured to stream my music anywhere I have data coverage. You can hunt for used Classics and Duet receivers on the net. I can synch them all or have each playing something different.

I also have numerous control options - Android/iPhone apps on my phone (and old phones), computer interface (web browser), and a Duet controller. My favorite is a Kindle Fire that I'm running Squeeze Commander on - 7" touchscreen display is cool.

If nobody minds, i'd like to piggy back a question regarding SB:
How does SB work with a universal remote control? I want to avoid having yet another remote control in my system (I don't want ot use my phone/ipad either). Does SB have a ten foot UI for the TV (like an Apple TV or Boxee Box)?

As much as possible I like to have things integrated and hidden. From what I saw on the SB website, it looks like I would need an extra remote. :s

    Thanks,

Any logitech harmony will work fine but with any non lcd remote its gonna be a pain if you have a large library. So most of the time I use my Iphone (or android when I had one). That works great. the duet remote also works nicely.

So the answer is yes a universal remote will work, but an iphone/ipad/lcd remote will work the best.

Thats why I decided I want a Apple TV rather than a SB Touch. Yes I have to have the TV on to browse my library, but I would anyway by default. Plus I just got an iPhone and have my office system as well. All will be accessing the same library and playing back AIFF (another type of lossless file).

Plus the apple TV is cheaper than the SB Touch and if your hardwired (like I am) wireless isnt a need, nor are the DAC's if your using HDMI or optical.

I will be able to move it around so that is not a problem. I heard somewhere that the squeezebox could only handle about 10,000 files. I have a bit more than that.

Never heard that before. That's roughly only 1000 cd's (if you assume an avg. of 10 tracks per cd) my brother is approaching 5000 cd's and has them all ripped and he has no issues. Where did you hear that?

It's decent enough to satisfy most. I have been using external dac's for a long time and it's my standard so I choose that route. But overall I think the internal dac circuit is pretty good. Of course I'm not satisfied with the walwart power supply so I have an external linear supply for my Touch. But I am anal and these things when added up, make a difference.

I'm reluctantly gonna threadjack, although I will 100% highly recommend the touch, I also need to know if I can use a touch in my garage and control it from my deck somehow? Plus, does anyone know if this deal is legit, or should I go elsewhere?

That seller is in the UK. What are you going to do if there is a problem with the item? Call the UK? Ship it back to the UK? Not a good idea, especially since you don't save that much after shipping costs are added.

As far as controls, there are many ways to control a Squeezebox. If you are in range of WiFi, you could use a Duet controller or a phone app or a PC to control it.

I kinda thought that the UK deal was risky endeavor, and as far as remote control on the touch, your saying I can keep my touch in the my garage set up, and control it while on my attatched deck w/o line of site?

As long as your deck is in range of your WiFi network, yes.
