Question Midnight mode and simulated center

Last night a friend and I decided to watch the expendables "BR" at 10 at night.
So I enabled midnight mode and sat down to the movie. Sure enough IMO it did nothing to the sound between the action scenes and the conversations. I had to turn it way up to hear the talking and than way down during the action.

Just a thought but could this be because I am running a simulated center? My receiver is setup with no center. I also am not running a sub as of yet. Could it be that I am not getting much volume in conversation scenes? I was running the DTS HD track.

Some movies are just recorded that way. Also, most avr's have a level of adjustment for late night listening, not just on or off. Yours may be different, I dunno.

I also run with no center or sub but only experience what your talking about on certain movies.

Ya I searched the menu and didn't see anything about level of midnight. It has not been all movies however it's annoying.

Why don't you have a center? Phantom mode can work well with some speakers, but I wouldn't with planars due to their smallish sweet spot.

FYI, you're not reaping the benefits of lossless audio with a phantom center, the audio track is being downmixed.

Actually mine have a very good phantom center, some ask me where my center is. They actually have a very large sweet spot if setup properly.

On the comment about downmixing, is that really true?
