Real advice on sub, no guess pls

Hi, every one,

I have read a lot from this forum(one of the best i should say), but one thing makes me wander is why everyone wants rock the house when talking about subwoofer. I want a sub to fill the bass, but not standout from other speakers in the system.

So my question is what is your advice on a powered sub
1: in the price range of $300-500,
2: good for both music and hometheater,
3: for a room of 19x15x9,
4: blend in well with my other polk speakers,
based on your OWN EXPERIENCE.

I have following candidaties based on what I read so far, if you have them or had them before, let's know what you feel now:
a: SVS 20-39PCi (price still a little high for me)
b: CHT-12 (tried in CC, not impressed, may caused by bad setup)
c: Adire Audio RAVA
d: 10" Titanic Vance Subwoofer Kit (seems to be a good one)
e: HSU VTF-2

I guess i could answer this question as I just recently got an SVS in my house. I had for three years a PSW350.. which I thought was good enough to do the job.

For such a small sub the 350 does ok.. or at least did for three years. I've only had my SVS 20-39PCi for 10 days now. WHen i hooked it up and then realized how much seamless bass i was missing from the low extension to the fronts. i was amazed.

At least in my case.. the SVS wasn't boomy like the 350 was. I never realized it was boomy till i hooked up the SVS. My intent wasn't to rattle pictures off the wall either. I was looking for deep accurate bass. Something that would integrate so welll that I wouldn't even know it was there.. as I think subs should be. I probably drive my SVS lower than most people with the same sub. I have mine set to -8 on my receiver most of the time.. it's PLENTY of bass still without ratteling the windows.

Once you find the right subwoofer for you, you will notice what an improvement it is in your music or movie watching experience.

I feel subs like SVS, HSU, Velo, Sunfire, REL, etc.. can rival the bass quality of some movie theaters with ease.

FYI SVS subs blend very well with RTi70's/RT800i's. mine certainly does.

In THAT price range, I would suggest looking at a Paradigm PDR-10.

I have never heard any bad words about SVS so far, that's
a great sub for sure.
Any taker to DIY sub kits out there?

Dr. a review will be forthcoming in about a week or two.. i've been to busy to take the time right now.. but i'll get to it as soon as i've demo'ed some more movies and music.

I have a DIY Tempest from Adire. It is the big brother to the Shiva in the Rava and I use the same amp. I would recommend the Shiva (rava) based on my experience with the Tempest. It goes low and pressurizes the room. It also blends well with my other speakers.

Thanks for your advice. I'm almost set for RAVA. pending final approval :)
Only concern now is the size, hope it won't appears too big in my setup.

BTW, in this one and a half years period, have you tried RAVA?
Have you ever regretted? What you see missing from Daton beside finishing?
Picture worth 1000 words, I thought 10' is small, now I am really concerbed about 18x18x18 RAVA, it may looks bigger than my TV ;)

The Dayton is a 14" x 14" cube.
