re: Randy's comment - think about what cars and clothes looked like ca. 1978... it makes the clean styling of the Yamaha hardware even more remarkable, I'd opine! :-)

    1) looks like these two components are sitting atop a beautiful chest.
    2) is that other component in the picture an early NAD amplifier?

The chest is pretty nice - it's lined with cedar and kept together with brass bands and bolts. Got it at an estate sale for $50. Really beautiful and smells nice!

The other amp is a NAD 3080 I was babysitting for RRomeo for a while. I'll post some pictures of it here in a min. I did a comparo with the two amps on my blog.

    https://silverfacestereo.wordpress.c...-and-nad-3080/

I love the Yamaha too esp the preamp - very clean!!

Nice find! The TX-2500 and TX-4500 are literally what saved Onkyo from disappearing, then they produced the more powerful TX-6500 and the TOTL TX-8500. Then came the MKII versions in the late '70s.

Don't know much about the TX-5000. It seems like an early '80s cousin to the Pioneer fluroscans with digital readouts. Probably still a pretty powerful 65 watts x 2.

    Enjoy!

Re: RT-901 Nice piece; looks great! Has it been rehabbed?

As an aside - you don't see the 901 (or the 7" RT-701) very often, but - given the choice - I'd rather have one of these than the auto-reverse RT-909 (or the 7" RT-707). Just seems like less to go wrong with the one-way machines!

And as an even more pointless, ego-centric aside: I've got to get crackin' on the rehab of my RT-909... someday.

Sorry...was uploading the pics to Photobucket so I could post them inline.

Anyway, has been fully rehabbed. I am still negotiating on price and want it as more of a display piece than anything.

we can have a Pioneer R2R chapter... ;-)

Now, anyone here have one of the previous generation of top-end Pioneer 'prosumer' decks? E.g., an RT-1022?

That TASCAM (to which, I presume, you refer) is a nice deck -- more of a 'prosumer' deck than the Pioneer; a bit beefier.

In terms of meters... ever see one of the previous generation of "good" Pioneer reel to reel decks...?

Since we're on a tape deck appendix today ;-)

Here's one that passed through the ol' homestead for a while some years back. I gave it to a fellow hifi nut who lives in VT... very pretty but in need for full rehab (not something I was up for at the time).

Here's my 1976 Sony TA-8650 V-FET Integrated amplifier. Delivers 80 watts per channel @ 0.1% THD both channels driven... The amp weighs a substantial 50 lbs. V-FETs were known for their tube-like sound and from what I understand, Sony did not make any money on these units.

I had it overhauled by Glen McDonald (Echowars) of Audiokarma when I got it. Shipping it to/from Hawaii was expensive, about $500 round trip via 2nd Day air, plus a few hundred for repairs as it was not working properly when I picked it up. The common issue with the V-FET amps were that the diodes would go bad so I had them replaced, also he replaced all the thermal pads for the transistors with thermal paste, replaced some other bad components as well as resoldered some cold joints. The only thing I hate about the amp is the terrible speaker connectors.

I don't think I've ever heard one of the V-FET Sony amplifiers... I'd love to have the opportunity, sometime. They're certainly not common.
EDIT: Man -- dat ding was built like a cast aluminum outhouse, man! :-) (and I do mean that in a good way!)

I think that your estimate of the era of that TEAC (A-1500U) is about right, Randy.

EDIT: heh, found it (well, the next model down, the A-1200U) in the 1971 "Allied Radio Shack" catalog*
