    Default I need a cabinet

I need an equipment rack/TV stand.

I have seen some nice stuff in some of the images here. Where do you guys shop for such things?

Width is going to be an issue. My current room is not as wide as should be for my SDA's so I have a max width of around 48 inches. I am thinking about something two rows wide with the focus on places for gear.

here is a quick list of what will go into the cabinet (I hope)

    Amp
    Preamp
    tuner AM/FM
    CD changer
    Blue Ray player
    Dish receiver
    power center
At some point an AVR most likely (I am going to run two channel audio with the TV for a bit)

48 inches is not wide enough for three rows so it needs to go up instead of out.

    Any suggestions?

There will be a 51 inch Samsung Plasma on top

Salamander all day long and twice on sunday.
They can be found all over the internet so do some research to get the right price......and they can be pricey.

    I'd suggest custom built.
Either as a DIY project or a local cabinet maker.

I found a killer deal at a local nude oak furniture store they sell "bookcases" at what ever size you desire mine was 48x19x19 $200that was 10 years ago but they build whatever you want cheap , its solid and nice .
All I did was spray some varnish on it .

Does this mean your SDAs are going to be only 48 inches apart?

They will be at 5'6 give or take a bit. To close but the room is what it is. I can go almost six feet between them with the distance to the side wall at 2'6".

I did not see any point in going any wider than necessary. No way there is enough room for three stacks wide so I thought best to stay narrow as possible.

Thanks for all of your suggestions.

I saw something on the Salamander site that I liked so a local guy is going to do something similar.

While it will start life with adjustable shelving (a drawer on both sides very bottom). The internal dimensions of the cabinets will be right for a 19" form factor equipment rack for future possible use. At the very least I would rack mount the amp, pre, and power center just to make moving easier. Hand truck under the heavy side and off it goes.

The build will be with 1" 9 laminate Maple plywood. I told him it was going to be heavy and his reply was I could jump on one of his cabinets. $475.00 with door frames mounted. I did not want wood fill for the doors so I am on my own to fill the open doors. I will post images when they guys are done.

The same aluminum extrusions that Salamander used are available via the internet and eBay if you want to DIY something similar.

I bought both my Salamander Synergy racks used locally via Audiogon, both at about 20% of new pricing.

The aluminum does not do it for me. As my username might indicate I am a wood guy through and through. I wanted it in solid Mahogany (and have the wood) he will not work with hardwood. I can understand as the hardwoods are much harder on the tooling. Every tool in his shop is set for sheet ply production.

When I get into something permanent I can foresee doing this again. My rent house is less than half the house I recently sold. I got rid of stuff until it hurt and I still have too much stuff. I used to keep everything on hardwood tables I had built with my father. No room for them here. Once into a new place I will make sure there is room.

The only person who sells decent audio gear around here is me so the used market is grim. My boat shop is in storage so doing this myself was not an option. I needed something pretty quick so this one I had to have built. Next year it will probably be a portable pantry in the kitchen.

    I'm glad you found someone.
If you would, post pictures of the finished project.
There are probably a lot of us here who like to get ideas we can borrow from.

It is something we came up with from across his desk on the fly. If it works as it should then feel free to borrow to your hearts content.

I will provide final dimensions and give thoughts on how it could have been better.
