You can bet they are being sold at cost. Certainly not below cost.
Just goes to show you how much markup there is in these speakers.
I paid 600 bucks for a set of 70s at Crutchfield.

I spoke w/a Sales Rep at Fry's. Even at this price, they're still making a profit. He would not comment what the mark up is @ its regular price, but when I mention 300-400%? He answered "around there".
I wouldn't put too much stock into that, that seems to be an ungodly amt. if that were true everybody would get into the home audio buisness. Just my opinion.Originally posted by kingtut

Believe me (or not), the mark-up is that ungodly, You have any idea the mark-up on jewerly? 500%! Furniture? Well...
It just seems that if that were true the seller would be making the lions share. That would leave little for the manuf. and even less for the manuf.'s supplier. I cant figure how they could poss. make ends meet at those figures.
The Polk speakers are made in Mexico -- cheap labor, no overtime pay, no workers' compensation insurance, no health or dental insurance for the employees in Mexico, little or no liability insurance, favorable tax treatment due to production in another country and NAFTA. Shall I go on?
Retail prices for speakers are usually 40-50% margin.
