    Default New receiver day!

I've been eyeballing the Onkyo 929 that was due to come out since they announced it, mostly out of upgradeitis. Sadly, my TX-NR1007 finally decided to fall prey to the dreaded HDMI board death last weekend... and while I know Onkyo will supposedly fix that problem for free if you hound them about it, I just didn't have that kinda' time, 'cause my DVR is filling up and my projector is my only display.

Of course, when I went looking to replace it, the 929 isn't out yet. So today, I'll be the proud new owner of an open box TX-NR3010 from Onecall. Should be a healthy upgrade from the 1007 (DTS: NeoX! Audyssey XT32! Separate transformers for audio/video! Cooler OSD!), so I'm very excited!

(Naturally, because my life is filled with funny moments, after I received the e-mail that my 3010 will arrive today, I also received an e-mail from Onkyo that the 929 is now shipping. Oh well... The 3010 is a higher end model anyway, and I don't see the 929 having any features that the 3010 doesn't have.)

P.S. - If I get Onkyo to replace the HDMI board on the 1007, expect it to end up on the market here at a pretty reasonable price. I'm gonna call 'em once I get the 3010 all set up and see what hoops I have to jump through to make that happen.
    Equipment list:
    Onkyo TX-NR3010 9.2 AVR
    Emotiva XPA-3 amp

I didn't know Onkyo was having HDMI board problems. Do you know if it is all models? Oh and let us know how you like the new one.

Pretty sure that was limited to the 1007 or maybe the x007 line, but especially the 1007. Mine just somehow avoided it for 3.5 years.

3010 is on the FedEx truck for delivery. Let the waiting game begin!

I bought the Darbee from a Polkie here... and couldn't be happier. I thought my Epson 8500UB was pretty damn sharp before... but with the Darblet, it's stunning. Definitely worth it.

Wicked unit. Do the replacement HDMI boards hold up in the older Onkyo's?

Congrats, the 3010 has an awesome XT32 with dual sub EQ. I believe it has an 11.2 pre-out as well like the 929. The 929 also has XT32 just not independent sub EQ.

My 807 also lasted about 3.5 years before HDMI failure. From contacting Onkyo and getting my AVR back in my set up, all took close to two and half weeks.

It was repaired locally which helped in the timely process. Onkyo requires a brief statement on email with a copy of your receipt, I didn't even have mine, just a purchase order on another PC. I offered to retrieve it for them but they authorized the repair anyway.

So not to worry, no special hoops to jump through, just an email.

Still waiting for my 805 to go down? Fingers crossed. I'm sure it must be 5 or 6 (maybe 7) years by now and running. Of course I don't use it "heavily". Maybe a movie a week or so. But it even HEATS up the HDMI board when I'm only using a set of headphones?

I know Phil is running in 11.2. But my wife could care "less" and makes that known! So 5.1 it has been even though I can do 7.1. So much for "upgradeitis".

Enjoy the 3010. Looks like a nice model!

Supposedly, the new boards have an addition that fixes the failure problems. Seems like people who have had the repair done have had good luck with it so far. I just can't wait that long. Plus, NEW TOY!

Thanks for letting me know that. I didn't really know what the process was, but I just looked at Onkyo's website and found where you can e-mail support, so we'll see what they say. I'm hoping they'll fix it for free as I've seen others report, and then someone else can have them an awesome-sounding receiver on the cheap (and I can mitigate the cost of the new toy).

I'm apparently on the end of FedEx's delivery run... so God knows when they're gonna show today. But it's on a truck SOMEWHERE.

YW, I spoke to them on the phone and got all the info I needed i.e; specific email address to apply for "one time out of warranty repair" and the address to send my AVR. I would think you could get the same info through the support email you found.

My Integra DTR 5.9 came out the same year as the fated Onkyo TX-06 models with HDMI board issues. My unit did give in about 2 years ago to the HDMI board failure. Thankfully since Integras have a 3 year warranty I was covered. In my case they just replaced a bunch of caps on the board (per the receipt) and its been chugging along with no issues since then.

The HDMI failure issue is pretty widespread from my understanding. Seems to affect TX-SRXX5 models and newer. Heat is the culprit in almost all cases. Friend of mine has the 875, which went out a few years ago. Capacitor replacement seems to fix a lot of the issues. There are a few good tutorials online. HDMI board replacements usually runs in the hundreds, so a lot of people either junk them or replace the caps themselves. At least in the case of my friend, the heat eventually killed a lot of other areas until the unit stopped working altogether. FWIW, it was kept in open air on top of his AV rack. He claimed that it would easily raise the temp of the room a few degrees during a long movie!

Hope the issue is fixed as Onkyos tend to have some awesome bells and whistles. Congrats on the purchase!

Getting onkyo to make the repair on my 807 wasn't hard at all. Just a little persistence. Only cost me gas money. Sent an email straight through their service dept.

Didn't you get that darbee from pfb? Might explain the recent failure trends your gear has been experiencing.

Well, new receiver day was interesting. First, I get the 3010 in, hook it all up... no picture from my cable box, though it's still working. Apparently, when the 1007 went, it somehow took the HDMI port of my cable box out. So I had to go to Comcast to swap boxes. However, I ended up getting a newer smaller box AND changed my cable plan to save me $50 a month to boot, so that worked out.

Then, I ran through Audyssey... and while it sounded good afterwards, it was a lot louder than normal at my usual listening levels. So I pulled out my SPL meter and found that all the channel trims were set so each channel was at 83dB instead of 75dB. I tried manually changing all the channel trims, but things still sounded off about the equalization. So I hooked the mic back up and let it get to the part where it tells you to set the sub to 75dB. Reading on screen... 75dB. Reading on SPL meter... 83dB. Then I hooked up the mic from my 1007 out of curiosity and that mic actually read the same as the SPL meter. So I ran a full calibration with the mic from the 1007 and it now sounds way better. But from what I understand, I still won't 100% know how it SHOULD sound until I get the right working mic. I sent Onkyo a note that my mic was faulty and I'm hoping I can get a replacement from them quickly.

Other than that, the 3010 is a beast! DTS NeoX actually sounds very nice and I may find myself using that more than DSX now. Still fiddling around with trying to pass the video through it as quickly as possible for gaming and some other things, but as soon as I threw in Nickel Creek on SACD, I was totally fine with the purchase.
